Monday Moodboard

This intense blue, appropriately named dazzling blue is another of Pantone's spring colours. Here are my favourite Etsy finds this week!
p.s. sorry, if my posts lately are short and sweet - I injured one of my fingers with a seam ripper and typing is awkward with a plaster on it...
*

Monday Moodboard

It's been especially frosty these last couple of days. Apart from the necessary grocery shopping and trips to the post office I've been pretty much cooped up indoors. As such, I like my surroundings to be pleasing to the eye and I've been on the lookout for some decorative pieces to add to my living/working space. Etsy offers plenty of home decor items...I could browse for ages :) Here are my fave's from international Etsy sellers!
*

Monday Moodboard

Our plans this past weekend to visit a summer flea market across the border in the Netherlands with a leasurely lunch afterwards fell through because of heavy rains. It was absolutely bucketing down! I guess that heralds the end of our five-day-summer. Sigh.
I made do with a virtual flea market trip on Etsy instead. Here are my favourite finds, all from international Etsy sellers!

1 -- 2 -- 3 -- 4

Thanks for stopping by today, and a warm welcome to my lovely new readers! Have a great day!

Flea Market Chic

Once in a while I reward myself for a job well done. My reward was a book I had been eyeing for some time now: Flea Market Chic by Liz Bauwens and Alexandra Campbell. The job in question was finishing up thirty sleepmasks as guest favors in record time!
Flea Market Chic is a charming decorating style that elevates flea market finds to must-have design elements. Some of you might know I love going to flea markets. The best ones are mostly across the border in the Netherlands and Belgium and thankfully I don't live that far from either.

*

some design ideas from the book / ein paar Design Ideen aus dem Buch

Some of my favourite collectibles are floral patterned dishes and every type of container from bowls to vases. Vintage flatware is also pretty much sought after.
*

Here are some of my own flea market finds / Hier einige Flohmarkt Schätze, die ich gefunden habe

How about you? Do you visit flea markets and what do you usually look for? Anyway, thanks for reading along. And a big welcome to my lovely new readers too! Have a terrific day!

Sunday Spotlight : Der Hausladen

English text below...

Pappmaché Herz mit Spitzenverzierung und gehäkelter Blüte / papier maché heart with lace and crochet flower

papier maché heart with crochet lace heart and pearls made specially for me by Barbara!!
Today I have the pleasure to introduce a very special artisan who happens to hail from Westfalia, Germany where I currently reside! Meet multitalented Barbara of "Der Hausladen". Here you will find shabby and vintage decorations for your home as well as upcycled handpainted furniture. If you like the nostalgic feel of old objects with history you will love this shop!
As a kid, Barbara has always loved all types of handicrafts, and later as she was training to become a child care worker she participated in craft classes which only served to reinforce her love for all things handmade. She simply needs to create with her hands and finds designing and making new items utterly satisfying. She tells me it is always an enriching experience creating something from an idea in her head, as she never knows how the finished product will look like. New ideas keep coming during the creative process. Barbara took a course in sculpture painting in Worpswede, a town near Bremen up in the North of Germany. She came away deeply impressed and started experimenting with paints on different surfaces. In her shop she offers small vintage furniture items painted in typical scandinavian colours such as white and soft pastels. She also offers useful object like pen trays and sewing boxes as well as all manner of pretty items that would look perfect in a shabby chic kitchen!
Her biggest challenge ist juggling a part-time job, her household plus her brandnew online shop. It is a daily balancing act and it is mostly weekends where she finds time to create new items to add to her shop.
Yet she believes in the handmade movement. She says it is important in times of mass-production. She continues to promote individuality and handicraft. Barbara believes this is a growing market as can be seen on sites like Etsy, Artfire, Dawanda etc. and this is a good thing.

Thank you so much for your time, dear Barbara!

Vintage & Retro

Hello.                     Hallo.

the week has only just begun and I'm already tired out. Today too many things happened at once and all of them needed my attention. I'll let you in on a secret ~ I'm not a very good multitasker. I much prefer doing things one after the other, but alas it wasn't to be today...
*

I'm going to show you a couple of things that I found at craft and fleamarkets, and that always help to cheer me up! Many moons ago my favourite teacher gave me a knitting dolly. Who remembers these? Mine was blue with a red hat and I loved it! I spent hours knitting the wool into long strings, and I do believe that all of my family received coasters that Christmas! So when I spotted this knitting dolly I knew I had to have it for the sake of nostalgia. I do plan on using it when I have the time...

Retro knitting dolly
*
And I couldn't resist buying these Vintage buttons, so cute!

Cleaning my chest of drawers the other day I found these half forgotten Vintage hankies! These are destined for a craft project!

I hope these pictures brought about a smile or a nice memory from your childhood. I feel better already just looking at my "Strickliesel" ! But before I can even think about trying it out I must head to the kitchen to cook dinner. Will this day never end?! Hope your Monday was less stressful.

Etsy treasury...shabby chic III

I didn't plan it, but looks like this week is dedicated to all things shabby chic!

My floral pajama pants were included in this charming treasury...

I ♥ shabby chic...

My great-grandmother had one, my grandmother and my mom had one. And now, finally, after longing for one for ages, I have one too! This romantic shabby chic bureau arrived the other day. It's just perfect! Can't wait to accessorize it with lovely vintage and shabby chic items handmade by Syl.
From now on this is where I will be writing notes on vintage inspired paper and sketching designs for my sleepwear line. Best of all this is the place where I will spend time each day to simply stare out the window and daydream...

Modern Hippie

I came up with a two-in-one design for this large carry-all featuring the funky Vintage 70s fabric I mentioned here. In the above photo the bag is shown in its hand-held version - the band around the top part can be pulled out and upward to from two short handles, resulting in a drawstring-like tote. I probably should have pulled out some more to demonstrate, but I only had time for a few quick snap-shots before the next onslaught of rain!

This bag is one of the largest I've ever made. I used up most of the Vintage fabric for the lower part and combined it with a honey beige cotton twill. It is fully lined with three deep pockets on the inside and closes with a large magnetic snap button. It has a very wide bottom which is not visible in the photos.
Attach the shoulder strap to the brass D-rings and it becomes a spacious carry-all - perfect for a weekend away, beach days or yoga class. This bag is fun and functional and will surely stand out wherever you go!

Lately the mornings here are quite nippy, and it barely warms up during the day. I guess it's goodbye summer, hello autumn. Maybe it's a little early, but I'm already thinking hot chocolate, cinnamon rolls, fleece blankets and wooly scarves. And of course I'm thinking about sewing stuff for Oktoberfest and Christmas - all manner of holiday-themed fabrics are available in the stores already!
But right this moment I'm enjoying looking at my newest bag creation...I just LOVE this Vintage fabric, it's so cheery! It's so special I'm not sure if I want to put this one up for sale. I'll think about it while I'm hanging on to the last trace of summer...

That 70's look :)

Since I'm no longer part of the corporate world I am free to wear whatever I like! I don't follow trends. I like mixing comfortable classics with Vintage - preferably from the 60's and 70's - spruced up by customizing or adding scarves (my mom's), pins or flower brooches. When buying Vintage I look for natural fabrics such a cotton or silk and shapes which aren't too outrageous or can be altered easily. I avoid anything polyester, lycra or spandex (popular in the 80's) and only choose colours that harmonize with my basic wardrobe. If I can't find what I'm looking for I make it myself! Here's an example of a blouse I made using a mille-fleur cotton fabric and an original pattern from the 70's. For that 'special' touch I embellished the collar with a velvet and lace trim and sewed on vintage buttons that were in the stash I got from my hubby's grandma.

And here's an example of customizing. I was very lucky to have found this Vintage 70's coat in a solid brown for next to nothing.

It's in great condition, none of the buttons were missing and all the seams are nicely piped. There was just a tiny smudge at the hemline which I took care of by shortening the coat to knee-length. It was too long anyway. I also gave it a good wash to get rid of the slightly musty smell ;-)
But there was still something missing...until I was inspired to appliqué the pocket flaps with my beloved heart-fabric, which some of you may remember I used for this bag and frame purse.

I get a lot of appreciative (and sometimes jealous) looks when I wear this coat! So much more fun than the basic black suit, don't you agree?

Have an inspired weekend!

More changes at Dawanda

The team at Dawanda have been busy restructuring the site, and commencing August 5th (this Wednesday) will be introducing a new selling category: Vintage

I have quite a number of vintage clothes, so this is definitely something I'll be looking into. I'm going to wait and see how buyers respond first. In Germany, the term 'vintage' is not that well-known, and many buyers don't speak English. It's difficult to convey the meaning, without potential buyers thinking you just want to get rid of 'old' junk! I also own some vintage jewelry; obviously I won't be selling any of that. It's just too precious and I'm too sentimental about it. This brooch is one of my favourites. In addition there will also be a new function that lets me specify the shipping costs for each country individually. And about time too! I always thought it was a bit silly to lump all countries together as 'international', because the pricing varies greatly! The downside is that shipping still remains quite high, especially to USA/Canada and Asia. Other good news is that Dawanda is finally taking action against sellers who continue to list obviously mass-produced items - and selling them successfully I might add, because unfortunately there are plenty of buyers who don't care as long as it's cheap!

Vintage Cherry

I finally finished this very special handbag at the weekend! Why is it special? Well, for one, it took me ages to work up the courage to cut the Belgian vintage fabric! When I spotted it years ago I immediately fell in love with the discreet all-over rose pattern and the soft taupe colour (the photo doesn't do justice to the colour). The fabric is a cotton/linen mix, which I washed on delicate cycle prior to cutting. Second, I was looking for a fresh print to match it up with and finally settled on this cherry fabric by Sandi Henderson. I'm glad I could also finally make use of the oversized button I'd saved. Third, I spent ages working out the neat pleats at the top. And finally, it's special...because this bag is for me! Yes! I've been wanting to make a bag for myself for the spring/summer season for ages. And it had to be fairly large. This bag is quite roomy with the bottom width measuring approx. 40cm (16 inches). I made up the lining from the rest of the rose fabric and added a pink/white polka dot fully lined pocket inside. The entire bag is stabilized with interfacing. Well, now that I've got that done I can continue working on bags for my shop! Oh, and a quick note to Entrecard advertisers: I've got so many of you lined up - please give my non-paying Entrecard bloggers a chance on my widget too!

Vintage Red

I was really happy when Damask Rose the big one sold within a week of listing! The lucky recipient will love this bag. I have since made another one in a different colour way. This is one of my favourite bag styles, because it's roomy enough (but not bulky) to keep more than just your make up - you can fit in all those face and handcreams, too!

Damask Rose ♥ The big one

Are you going on a trip? Line up your bottles, tubes and jars of face and hand cream in this smart washbag! And they won't topple over, because I've made the bottom of this bag slightly narrower than my Damask Rose make up bag. Plus it won't take up much space in your suitcase either!
The body of the bag is made from a lovely sugar pink fabric from Amy Butler's Lotus Collection. I have teamed it up with a flowery fabric in matching pink for the flap, which is fastened with an original 70's button in ivory. The flap is purely decorative, since this bag has a zip to close it securely. It is lightly padded and lined with a medium-weight cotton in toning pink.
Meas. approx. 23 x 18 x 5 cm or 9 x 7.1 x 2 inches *dry cleaning recommended / spot clean only Available in my shop now!

Vintage Rose

If you're a romantic gal (like I am)...then this little make up bag is perfect for you! Made from light green decorator weight fabric appliquéd with a beautiful 'English rose motif' -  cut from my personal collection of vintage fabrics! I have embellished the motif with iridescent flower-shaped paillettes and genuine SWAROVSKI crystal beads. It's lined with a medium-weight cotton in creamy ivory. Lightly padded for softness. Size approx. 16 x 14 x 7 cm or 6.5 x 5.5 x 2.5 inches. This unique one-of-a-kine bag is available in my shop here.
