Hi everybody,

what a turbulent start to the new year. On top of pandemic fatigue (yes, it's a thing).

We've been in a partial lockdown since January and by the end of February it will be one year that I've been sheltering at home with the occasional trips to the supermarket. Plus earlier this month we were hit by a massive snow storm - which, if you have been following my blog for some time - you will know is quite unusual. My area is known for rain, but not snow or subzero temperatures. We were completely snowed in for an entire week, and I'm just glad I had the foresight to stock up on food.

I remain hopeful that with more and more people getting vaccinated there will be a shift by the end of this year. Until then we will still need to remain cautious and follow the hygiene guidelines including wearing a mask.  

Needless to say the international trade fair that I used to go to every year won't be taking place this year. Instead there will be a digital version. I am curious how that will work out, and I truly hope it will be better than the zoom meeting I had the other day with about twenty other people - one guy obviously had his laptop on his coffee table, because we were looking at his knees the entire time haha. Don't do this.

Anyway, on to the purpose of this blog post. If you have been following me on instagram you will have noticed that I've barely posted anything crafty. Truth is that I've been feeling unmotivated and seem to have lost my creative mojo. I was really unhappy about it and tried to combat it by going through diy magazines, looking for inspiration online and I even bought a few sewing/crafting books to get me going. Thankfully one of these books reignited my creative spark! 

Making Marmalade (this is what the bunny is called) by illustrator Simone Gooding is a sewing book that uses wool felt and quilting fabrics. It looks simple enough, but don't be fooled - there is a lot of handstitching involved and some of the steps aren't explained - it is assumed that you have basic sewing knowledge. So if you have made dolls/animals before and especially doll clothes, this book is for you. For beginner sewists it is not.

The projects are divided into seasons. The main project revolves around Marmalade and corresponding seasonal outfits, plus an adorable baby bunny (see above). I appreciate that there are large photos of the finished projects as well as close up pics throughout the book. And Simone's illustrations, of course, are lovely. I just went ahead and made a few projects regardless of the current season, with a few changes here and there to suit my taste. Marmalade measures about 12 inches. You need a lot of patience sewing doll clothes this small.

Instead of glass eyes I simply stitched the eyes with black embroidery yarn. I used cream colored and white felt for the body and exchanged some felted items with my favorite fabrics. I especially love how the sweet pillow and quilted blanket turned out. You don't require a lot of fabric for these projects - all of the fabric I used here are from my remnant bin! One of the best things about this book - the patterns at the back of the book are all actual size!

Now that my creative flow is back I will be continue making outfits for bunny (I think there are two outfits left) and I also have spring/summer craft ideas lined up. Can't wait to share :)

In shop news...

As mentioned in my previous post I have been waiting for fabric deliveries longer than usual due to the pandemic. Thankfully this spring collection by acufactum is now on its way to me. Just looking at these fabrics makes me happy. The details are adorable. Honestly I can't wait for Spring!

Easy diy Fabric Box

Sewing fabric boxes isn't an original idea, but they are fun to make, especially if you use pre-cut fabric squares from a 5 " Charm Pack, like I did! This makes a neat little box to store craft supplies. Filled with folded up fat quarters, thread and a sewing kit it also makes a cute gift for a sewing friend!

Dies ist keine originelle Idee, aber Stoffkörbchen nähen macht einfach Spaß und geht schnell, vor allem wenn man vorgeschnittene Stoffquadrate verwendet, wie z.B. aus diesem hübschen Charm Pack. Das fertige Körbchen ist ca. 11 x 11 cm. Befüllt mit Fat Quarters und Kurzwaren ist es eine nette Geschenkidee für die nähende Freundin!

You will need

Charm Pack 5 x 5"

fusible interfacing, like Pellon to add stability

bias tape

Nähmaschine

How to:

1. Select 5 squares from your charm pack stack for outer box.
2. Cut 5 x 5" squares from Pellon and iron on wrong side of fabric squares.
3. Sew the four box panels together, right sides facing, using a 1/4" seam allowance. At the bottom of each seam stop sewing at 1/4". Press seams open.
4. Attach bottom panel right sides facing, making sure corner seams meet all four points. Pin all around.
5. Starting in the center of one side seam stitch all around, pivot at corners. Go slowly!
6. Select 5 squares from your charm pack for inside box.
7. Repeat steps 3 - 5.
8. Turn outer box right side out and push out corners. Slip in inside box, left sides facing, seams aligning. Pin all around and use a narrow 1/8" to stitch layers together.
9. Starting in the center of one side pin the bias tape all around. When you come to the starting point, fold under the opposite end and overlap. Pin and stitch through all layers, catching both sides of the tape.

So geht's:

1. 5 Quadrate für die Außenseite aussuchen.
2. 5 Stück Decovil auf die Größe der Quadrate zuschneiden und auf die linke Seite bügeln.
3. Vier Panele rechts auf rechts zusammennähen (1 cm Naht), dabei am unteren Ende ca. 1 cm aufhören zu nähen. Nähte auseinander bügeln.
4. Unteres Panel rechts auf rechts feststecken, dabei treffen die Nähte auf die 4 Ecken. 
5. An einer Seite mittig anfangen und langsam um das Quadrat nähen, in den Ecken Nadel stecken lassen, Fuß anheben, Quadrat drehen, Fuß senken und weiternähen.
6. 5 Quadrate für das Futter aussuchen.
7. Schritte 3 - 5 wiederholen.
8. Box vorsichtig auf Rechts drehen, Ecken rausdrücken. Futter links auf links in die Box schieben, Nähte treffen aufeinander. Obere Kante feststecken und knappkantig steppen.
9. Schrägband an einer Seite mittig befestigen. Um die obere Kante legen und feststecken. Das Ende einschlagen und etwas überlappend über den Anfang legen. Knappkantig durch alle Lagen steppen, dabei darauf achten, dass beide Seiten des Schrägbandes genäht werden.

Happy Hoop Art

Kicking the year off with a fun do-it-yourself project! This cute hoop art is wonderfully versatile - choose any color yarn for the pompoms and tassels. I went with grey, pink and mint and I chose the word "Happy", because I decided that's my motto for this year. You can choose any other word (or words) and if you plan to hang this in a nursery you can, of course, add your baby's name.

Das neue Jahr  2018 fängt bei mir gleich mit einem süßen DIY-Projekt an! Dieser Wandbehang mit Pompoms und Quasten lässt sich beliebig in der Farbe variieren. Ich habe mich für Grau, Rosa und Mint entschieden. Und da mein Motto dieses Jahr "Happy" lautet, musste es natürlich als Schriftzug in die Mitte. Ihr könnt selbstverständlich ein anderes Wort aussuchen oder z.B. einen Namen. 

You will need

wooden hoop (any size you like)

wool yarn (three colors)

white or natural solid color cotton fabric, enough to cover hoop

felt tip marker suitable for textiles (color your choice)

iron, ironing board and piece of parchment paper 

stiff cardboard (from a cereal box)

scissors

super glue

Ihr braucht

Stickrahmen (Größe nach Wunsch)

Wolle (drei Farben)

Baumwollstoff - Weiß oder Naturfarben uni

Textilmalstift mit Rundspitze (Farbe nach Wunsch)

Bügeleisen, Bügelbrett, Backpapier

Stück Pappe

Schere

Starker Kleber

• Choose your word and font (bold works best), type it in your computer, size it to fit the inside diameter of hoop and print. This is your template.
• Steam iron your piece of cotton fabric. Place the cloth over the template and the hoop over the fabric to determine placement. Make small markings top and bottom to aid placement later. 
• The fabric marker will bleed a little into the fabric, so outline the letters first, then fill in.
• Next place the piece of fabric on the ironing board, cover with parchment paper and press the iron (no steam) on the word.This will set the paint color. Let dry.

• Wort (oder Name) sowie Schriftart aussuchen (ich empfehle Fettdruck). Wort im Computer schreiben, Größe an den Innendurchmesser des Stickrahmens anpassen und ausdrucken.
• Baumwollstoff glatt bügeln. Ausgedrucktes Wort unter den Stoff legen und Rahmen darüber legen. Kleine Markierung oben und unten mittig des Rahmens machen - für die spätere Platzierung.
• Da die Textilfarbe des Stifts etwas ausläuft, zunächst die Buchstaben des Wortes umranden, dann ausfüllen.
• Zuletzt das beschriftete Stoffstück auf das Bügelbrett legen, Backpapier darüber legen und mit dem Bügeleisen (ohne Dampf) die Farbe auf dem Stoff fixieren. Trocknen lassen.

Meanwhile, make the pompoms! You will need one large, two medium and three small pompoms.

Make your pompoms the same way as in this tutorial.

In der Zwischenzeit die Pompoms fertigen! Für dieses Projekt, ein großes, zwei mittlere und drei kleine Pompoms fertigen. Wie das geht zeige ich in dieser Anleitung. 

Lastly, make the three tassels! The middle one is longer than the other two, therefore cut two pieces of cardboard -(example: mine are 4" and 5.5"). Follow the steps above.

• Wind yarn around piece of cardboard until you're satisfied with the thickness. Slip a length of yarn through the top part and tie loosely. 
• Cut through yarn at the bottom and lay the tassel flat. Tie off and knot the center.
• Fold over, so that all yarn is now facing down. Cut a piece of yarn and tie and knot the top about 1" from the top. 
• Even out the bottom edge and cut off any stray yarn.

Zum Schluß die Wollquasten fertigen! Die mittlere ist etwas länger als die anderen beiden, daher zwei Stück Pappe schneiden - (meine sind 10 cm und 13 cm lang). Schritte wie in der Collage folgen.

• Wolle längs um die Pappe wickeln bis die gewünschte Dicke erreicht ist. Ein Stück Wollfaden abschneiden und unter die oberen Fäden schieben. Locker zu binden.
• Unten aufschneiden und Quaste mittig mit dem Faden fest binden und knoten.
• Alle Fäden nach unten zusammen legen. Ein weiteres Stück Wolle abschneiden und ca. 2 cm von oben fest umwickeln und verknoten.
• Quaste unten begradigen und überstehende Wollfäden abschneiden

Assembly

• Tie the tassels at the bottom center of outer hoop ring, the longer one in the middle. Make sure the knots are at placed at the back.
• Tie the pompoms the same way: Medium, large, small on the left side of outer hoop ring / Small, medium, small on the upper right side of hoop ring.
• Place fabric over inner hoop ring and slip under outer hoop ring. Straighten fabric as necessary. Tighten the screw at the top to secure everything.
• Cut away excess fabric, leaving about 1/2 ". Spread a little super glue on the inside frame and press fabric down, hold for a few seconds. Release and let dry
• Final step - cut a piece of wool yarn, loop through top screw and hang your cute handmade hoop art in your favorite place!

Zusammenfügen

• Die Quasten unten mittig an den äußeren Stickrahmen fest binden; die längere in der Mitte. Dabei die Knoten nach hinten schieben.
• Die Pompoms ebenfalls an den äußeren Rahmen binden: Mittel, Groß, Klein auf die linke Seite / Klein, Mittel, Klein auf die obere rechte Seite.
• Stoff über den inneren und unter den äußeren Stickrahmen legen. Anhand der Markierungen in die richtige Position rücken. Die Schraube oben festdrehen, so dass alles fixiert ist.
• Überschüssigen Stoff bis auf 1,5 cm abschneiden. Etwas Kleber rückseitig auf den inneren Rahmen geben, Stoff ein paar Sekunden gut andrücken. Trocknen lassen.
• Letzter Schritt: ein Stück Wollfaden abschneiden, durch die obere Schraubhalterung schlingen und Stickrahmen im Lieblingsraum aufhängen!

Lace wrapped upcycled milk bottles

I had been collecting a few small milk bottles thinking that I might use them for some craft or other. Then I discovered some beautiful lace I had forgotten about and an idea was born. This is another one of my super easy five-minute-crafts, and the perfect little DIY-idea for people who are itching to get crafty, but don't have a lot of time (or energy). I think it took longer to wash and remove the sticky label than the actual craft :)

Ich hatte ein paar dieser kleinen Milchflaschen gesammelt, aber bislang noch keine Idee. Dann habe ich diese wunderschöne breite Spitze wiederentdeckt und so sind die Milchflaschen dann doch noch zum Einsatz gekommen! Dieses DIY ist sehr einfach und in fünf Minuten fertig. Eine simple Idee und mit Blümchen dekoriert ein netter Blickfang auf der Fensterbank oder Kommode. Ehrlich gesagt hat es länger gedauert die Flaschen zu waschen und den Aufkleber zu entfernen :)

You will need // Ihr benötigt

Step One

Remove sticky label on milk bottle and thoroughly wash and dry. You can keep the bottle caps for another project. Measure the circumference of the lower part of bottle.

Step Two

Cut a piece of lace to that length.

Step Three

Cut three pieces of double-sided tape to that length also. Stick the tape on the wrong side of the lace. Then gently pull off the backing. 

Step Four

Wrap the lace around the bottle, aligning one side with the bottom edge. Make sure the tape sticks. Finished! 

Schritt Eins

Den Aufkleber von der Flasche entfernen und Flasche gründlich säubern und trocknen. Den Durchmesser der Flasche abmessen.

Schritt Zwei

Spitze auf das abgemessene Maß zuschneiden.

Schritt Drei

Je drei Streifen vom doppelseitigen Klebeband auf das gleiche Maß schneiden. Fest auf die linke Seite der Spitze drücken. Dann das Trägerpapier vorsichtig abziehen.

Schritt Vier

Spitze um die Flasche wickeln und gut andrücken. Fertig!

5 Minute DIY { Hair Bows }

Hey everybody! Here's a great way to use up your small scraps of fabric plus these hair bows make a cute gift! I'm sure we all know a little girl who would appreciate these :) Also, they don't take long to make. Depending on your hand sewing skills it's possible to make one bow in 5 minutes.

Hallo Mädels! Hier zeige ich eine DIY Idee mit Stoffresten. Die süßen Haarschleifen eignen sich auch gut als kleines Mitbringsel. Darüber freuen sich kleine Mädels bestimmt! Außerdem sind sie schnell gemacht. Je nachdem wie schnell ihr nähen könnt schafft man eine Haarschleife locker in 5 Minuten.

You will need (for one bow)

Cotton fabrics:

1 rectangle 6 " x 4.5" / 1 rectangle 2.5" x 1.77"

1 soft hair elastic

sewing machine

basic sewing kit

Für eine Schleife braucht ihr

Baumwollstoffe:

1 Rechteck 15 x 11,5 cm / 1 Rechteck 6 x 4,5 cm

1 weicher Haargummi

Nähmaschine, Nähutensilien

How to

Fold large rectangle in half, right sides together and stitch a seam along the open edge, leaving a small gap for turning. Roll seam toward the center and press seam open. Stitch narrow side seams. Clip corners and carefully turn right side out through gap. Slip stitch the gap closed by hand.

So geht's

Das große Rechteck rechts auf rechts zur Hälfte falten. Offene Kante steppen, dabei eine kleine Öffnung zum Wenden lassen. Die Naht öffnen,  zur Mitte schieben und flach bügeln. Seitennähte knappkantig steppen. Ecken kurz vor der Naht abschneiden. Vorsichtig durch die Öffnung auf Rechts wenden. Öffnung per Hand schließen.

To make the "knot" fold small rectangle in half lengthwise and narrowly stitch a seam. Turn right side out. Since this is such a small piece you might want to use (or invest in) a turning tool. Roll seam to the center and press. Also fold under one short side and press. Take your big rectangle and use your fingers to scrunch it together in the center. Loop the "knot" piece through the elastic and place the bow on top. Secure the "knot" at the back by slipping one end under the folded end and stitch together by hand. Make sure all seams are located at the back. Congrats - your hair bow is finished!

Nun das kleine Rechteck nehmen, längs zur Hälfte falten und knappe Seitennaht steppen. Auf Rechts wenden. Da dies Fummelarbeit ist hilft ein sogenannter Streifenwender. Die Naht zur Mitte schieben und bügeln. Eine kurze Seite einschlagen und ebenfalls bügeln. Dann das Schleifenteil nehmen, mit den Fingern in der Mitte zusammendrücken; den kleinen Streifen durch den Haargummi stecken, die Schleife oben drauf setzen; dabei das offene kurze Ende unter das eingeschlagene Ende schieben. Den Streifen hinten mit kleinen Stichen zusammennähen. Darauf achten, dass alle Nähte "nach hinten" zeigen. Herzlichen Glückwunsch - eure Haarschleife ist fertig!

5 Minute DIY { Confetti Hearts }

Hello lovelies!         Hallo ihr Lieben!

Here's a last-minute Valentine's DIY idea - cute confetti hearts! I promise these are fun and easy to make. All you need are a few sheets of transparent drawing paper, A4 size works best. A heart template (I drew mine by hand and it worked just fine), heart shaped confetti in a bold color, pencil, marker pen in red or pink, sewing machine and thread in bold color.

Zum heutigen Valentinstag zeige ich schnell noch eine süße DIY Idee - Konfettiherzen! Ihr benötigt dafür ein paar Bögen Transparentpapier, Größe A4. Eine Herz-Vorlage (ich habe meins einfach mit der Hand gezeichnet), Herzkonfetti in Rot oder Pink, Bleistift, Filzstift in Rot oder Pink, Nähmaschine und Garn.

Step 1 // Schritt 1

Fold over A4 sheet of paper and use the template to trace the heart shape.

Papier zur Hälfte falten und mit Hilfe der Vorlage zwei Herzen zeichnen.

Step 2 // Schritt 2 

Use bold colored thread to stitch along the pencil line leaving a small gap on one side.

Carefully cut out hearts leaving a scant margin. Fill the hearts with confetti and stitch up the gap. Shake the heart a bit to distribute the confetti. With the marker pen write a little sentiment suiting the occasion or draw a simple heart.

Entlang der Bleistiftlinie steppen, dabei eine kleine Öffnung an einer Seite lassen.

Die Herzen mit einem schmalen Rand vorsichtig ausschneiden und mit Konfetti befüllen. Öffnung schließen. Die Herzen leicht schütteln, damit sich das Konfetti besser verteilt. Mit dem Filzstift zum Valentinstag passende Wörter draufschreiben.

Make three, five or more to make a cute garland or slip one in a greeting card to make it extra special! Or how about using them as gift tags.

Mit mehreren kann man eine hübsche Girlande daraus zaubern. Oder man steckt ein Herz in eine schöne Valentinskarte - doppelte Überraschung! Sie kommen auch gut als Geschenkanhänger zum Einsatz.

Rustic pine cone candle holders

It's been a while since I've shared an easy DIY idea. Last Christmas I had a rustic theme going on. I made kraft paper & fabric tags, rustic Christmas tree decorations and rustic Advent candles. I received such positive feedback to these tutorials that I decided to share another rustic idea!

Letztes Jahr habe ich euch einige rustikale Weihnachtsideen gezeigt, z.B. die Kraft-Papier Anhänger mit Stoff, die Mini-Weihnachtsbäume sowie die rustikalen Adventskerzen. Zu diese DIY-Ideen habe ich viel positives Feedback erhalten; deshalb gibt es heute wieder eine rustikale Deko!

You'll need / Ihr benötigt

pine cones (4" high) / Tannenzapfen (10 cm hoch)

40 mm wide ribbons with wire edge / 40 mm Bänder mit Drahtkante

candle holders with pin / Adventskranzstecker

tee lights / Teelichter

scissors / Schere

drill / Bohrer

mini styrofoam rings / Mini-Styroporringe (optional)

Step 1

Remove the center stalk of the pine cone and drill a tiny hole down the center to fit the pin of the candle holder. Since I'm not good with power tools I asked my husband to do it when he got home from work. 

Step 2

Since most pine cones aren't even on the bottom you'll need to 'sit' it in something like a ramekin dish. I happened to have mini styrofoam rings in my craft stash so I used those. I simply wrapped some of the ribbon around them for a cohesive look.

Step 3

Cut as many 2 - 3" pieces of ribbon as required. Use the shorter pieces for when you reach the top of the cone.

Step 4

Loosely fold over the ribbon pieces and slide in between the scales of the pine cone. This is why it's important that the ribbon comes with a wire edge, the regular ones won't hold. Lastly, pop the tee light onto the candle holder pin and stick it into the top of the cone.

Schritt 1

Den "Stiehl" ganz oben entfernen und ein winziges Loch bohren, tief genug, dass der Stecker reinpasst. Diesen Schritt hat meine bessere Hälfte übernommen, da ich mit Bohrern nicht so gut umgehen kann ;)

Schritt 2

Die Zapfen sind meistens nicht eben, daher empfehle ich sie später in kleine Backförmchen zu stellen, oder wie hier auf Mini-Styroporringe, die ich mit Band umwickelt habe, zu setzen. Dies dient lediglich der Stabilität.

Schritt 3

Nun Bänder in 6 - 8 cm Stücke schneiden. Die Kürzeren eignen sich für den oberen Teil der Tannenzapfen. Die Stücke locker zur Hälfte falten und zwischen die "Schuppen" schieben. Aus diesem Grund ist es wichtig, dass das Band eine Drahtkante hat, ansonsten würde es nicht halten.

Schritt 4

Zuletzt das Teelicht auf den Stecker setzen und diesen in das gebohrte Loch stecken. Vorsichtig auf den vorbereiteten Ring setzen oder wie oben empfohlen in eine kleine Backform.

5 Minute Diy [ Scrap Hearts ]

These are so easy and fun to make! In fact, I have a whole box full of these. Some I use for decoration, some as little appreciation gifts for customers. The best thing is that these are a great way to use up those itty-bitty fabric scraps left over from sewing projects!

Diese gefüllten Herzen sind so einfach zu machen! Ich habe jede Menge davon. Manche benutze ich als Deko, andere verschenke ich. Auf jeden Fall lassen sich mit dieser DIY Idee die vielen kleinen Stoffreste verwerten!

You'll need // Material

small fabric scraps * kleine Stoffreste

plastic heart molds * befüllbare Herzen aus Kunststoff

baker's twine * buntes Garn

scissors * Schere

First, sort the scraps by color, i.e. all pink scraps, all blue scraps etc. I find the hearts looks prettier if the scraps are color coordinated :) If the scraps seem too big, cut them to size. Fill each side of the heart molds with equal amounts of scraps. You might want to place a fun motif at the bottom, so that it looks nice from either side. Carefully click the heart halves together. Thread the top with twine of your choice and knot. Now make a few more!

Zunächst die Stoffreste farblich sortieren. Ich finde die Herzen sehen hübscher aus, wenn sie jeweils nur eine Farbrichtung beinhalten, z.B. rosa Stoffreste, blaue Stoffreste etc. Zu große Stoffstücke einfach zerschneiden. Beide Hälften befüllen; eventuell ganz unten ein schönes Motiv wählen, damit es nach von beiden Seiten schön aussieht :) Vorsichtig zusammendrücken. Zum Schluß das Garn in der Wunschfarbe durch die Schlaufe ziehen und verknoten. Fertig!
