The Scrappy Pincushion

Hi everybody! Here's another fun scrapbusting idea. It's super easy, so go ahead and make a couple for your sewist friends too :)

Hallo! Heute zeige ich Euch ein süßes Nadelkissen DIY aus Stoffresten. Es ist wirklich einfach, so dass man an einem Nachmittag mehrere davon machen und an nähende Freundinnen verschenken kann!

You'll need // Ihr benötigt

Fabric scraps // Stoffreste

4 buttons (15mm) // 4 Knöpfe (15mm)

iron on interfacing // aufbügelbares Volumenvlies

8 cm decorative trim / 8 cm dekoratives Webband

polyester fiberfill // Füllwatte

sewing machine // Nähmaschine

basic sewing kit // Nähutensilien

Step One + Two 

From the fabric scraps cut one square piece 13 x 13 cm (5 x 5 ") for the back and nine small pieces 5 x 5 cm (2 x 2") for the front. Iron.

Für die Rückseite ein Quadrat à 13 x 13 cm und für die Vorderseite neun kleine Quadrate à 5 x 5 cm schneiden. Bügeln.

Step Three + Four

Arrange small squares as desired. Using a 0.5 cm seam allowance start by sewing the three top pieces together, right sides facing. Iron the seams open. Do the same for the second and third row. Sew the three small strips of fabric together, right sides facing, to complete the square. Iron all seams open.
Next cut two squares of interfacing to fit both front and back of pin cushion. Iron to the wrong side according to manufacturer's instructions. Lay the pieces right sides together, pin all around, but leave a 5 cm (2") gap for turning. Double the trim and slip inbetween the layers in one corner before sewing. Clip corners and gently turn right side out. Iron.

Die kleinen Quadrate für die Vorderseite wunschgemäß anordnen. Dann jeweils drei Quadrate rechts auf rechts zusammennähen (0,5 cm Nahtzugabe). Nähte auseinander bügeln. Die drei Streifen ebenfalls rechts auf rechts zusammenähen und Nähte auseinander bügeln. Zwei passende Quadrate Vlies zuschneiden und auf die linke Seite des Vorder- und Rückteils bügeln. Diese rechts auf rechts zusammenlegen, rundherum abstecken, dabei das gedoppelte Webband auf einer Seite dazwischen schieben. Beim Zusammennähen eine 5 cm Öffnung zum Wenden lassen. Ecken kurz vor der Naht knapp abschneiden und vorsichtig auf Rechts wenden. Bügeln.

Step Five

Fill the pincushion with fiberfill through the opening. Then close the opening with a few stitches by hand. Attach the four buttons to the front and pull the thread tightly through the back, indenting the pincushion slightly. Tie off and you're done! Now that was pretty easy wasn't it?

Nadelkissen gut mit Füllwatte füllen. Die Öffnung mit ein paar Stichen schliessen. Nun die Vorderseite mit den vier Knöpfen verzieren, dabei den Faden nach hinten zur Rückseite führen und fest anziehen, so dass eine kleine Vertiefung ensteht. Fest knoten und fertig! Das war doch wirklich einfach, oder?

Monday Moodboard

The last time I wore emerald green was waaay back at my graduation. At that time it wasn't a popular colour choice. Despite that or perhaps because of that I went for it. I seem to always prefer the unconventional ;-) Emerald was last year's color of the year and also happens to be the birthstone for May, so I put together a moodboard with a couple of great finds from Etsy. How do you feel about this deep green?

Das letzte Mal trug ich Smaragdgrün zu meinem Schulabschluss. Das liegt schon ewig zurück. Damals war das keine beliebte Farbwahl. Trotzdem oder vielleicht gerade deswegen hatte ich mich dafür entschieden. Ich liebe eben das Unkonventionelle ;-) Smaragdgrün war im vergangenen Jahr die Farbe des Jahres; ist der Geburtsstein für den Monat Mai und dient als Inspiration meiner heutigen Collage. Wie findet Ihr diese tiefgrünen Farbe?

Hi everybody!              Hallo, Mädels!

My friends over at Union Knopf (a leading button and trims manufacturer) recently sent me a box full of pretty buttons, trims and applique motifs. As you can imagine it was so much fun going through the products :) The company asked me to create something with these items and review them according to a specific list of criteria. I started off with a fun set of race car buttons, but I'll be posting about the other items in regular intervals, so check back often if you're a button fanatic like I am :)

Von den netten Kollegen bei Union Knopf (marktführender Hersteller von Knöpfen und Accessoires) habe ich neulich ein Paket, gefüllt mit hübschen Knöpfen, Borten und Applikationen erhalten. Von der Auswahl war ich total begeistert und darf nun die einzelnen Produkte "testen", d.h. nach meiner eigenen Vorstellung daraus etwas zaubern und nach bestimmten Kriterien bewerten. Ich werde also in regelmäßigen Abständen hier bei Duni's Studio über Knöpfe & Co. berichten - reinschauen lohnt sich, falls Ihr auch so "Knopf"-begeistert seid wie ich! Mein erstes Projekt beinhaltet diese lustigen Rennwagen Knöpfe mit passendem Aufbügelmotiv :)

 

In all of my 6+ years of blogging I don't think I've ever done a post on boy's clothes/accessories, as I don't generally sew kid's clothing (except for a few baby boy/girl items). But I wanted a bit of a challenge with my first project, hence the boy-themed buttons!

In den 6 + Jahren die ich schon blogge, habe ich soweit ich weiß keinen einzigen Beitrag über Sachen für Jungen gepostet, naja, mit Ausnahme von Babysachen. Aber mit diesem, meinem ersten Union-Knopf-Projekt, wollte ich mal etwas für mich Untypisches machen!

Zoooom! I decided to embellish a stripey boy's shirt with a couple of race car buttons. Of all the available colours I definitely prefer the primary ones: red, blue and yellow - these really pop. I consider these to be novelty buttons, ideal for embellishing belts, little boy's rucksacks or sportsbags as well as for use in mixed media or scrapbook projects! I find the unusual shape makes it a bit fiddly to handle as a regular button, say on a buttondown shirt or jacket. I used the iron-on applique as an elbow patch. I ironed it on according to manufacturer's instructions and it adhered perfectly to the fabric. If used on delicate fabrics, it is best to stitch the motif on instead of ironing.

Wrooom! Ich habe mich entschieden dieses Streifenshirt etwas aufzupimpen. Von den Knopffarben  gefallen mir besonders die Primärfarben Rot, Blau und Gelb. Die heben sich sehr schön vom Hintergrund ab und man sieht die Details besser als z.B. bei dem weißen oder grauen Knopf. Durch die ungewöhnliche Form finde ich diesen Knopf etwas fummelig in der Handhabung und würde ihn daher eher als Zierknopf, z.B. an einem Gürtel, Rucksack oder Turnbeutel verwenden. Ich kann mir durchaus vorstellen diese Knöpfe auch im Bastelbereich einzusetzen. Das Aufbügelmotiv gefiel mir besonders gut von der Optik her. Es ließ sich problemlos nach Anleitung des Herstellers aufbügeln - hier als Patch am Ellenbogen. Ansonsten kann man es selbstverständlich annähen; empfehlenswert bei empfindlichen Stoffen.
