You might have heard of Sukhi Rugs. This website offers an amazing variety of handmade rugs. You might want to check out their inspiration page. Btw, "Sukhi" means happy in Nepalese. High up on the popularity scale are the graphic Beni Ourain rugs from Morocco which in my opinion harmonize surprisingly well with the current Scandinavian interior design trend. Also popular are the whimsical feltball rugs handmade in Nepal. If you wish to learn more about the process of how these are made check out this great video! Teppiche sind zeitlos und ein schöner Blickfang in jedem Wohnraum. Immer mehr Teppiche in knalligen Farben und spannendem Mustermix kommen auf den Markt. Der Webshop Sukhi bietet Fairtrade Patchwork Kelims sowohl in kräftigen Farben als auch Naturtönen und jedes dieser Unikate verleihen einem Zuhause Wärme und Gemütlichkeit. Schon lange habe ich nach einem fröhlichen Farbtupfer für unseren eher neutralen Eingangsbereich gesucht. Es kam mir daher sehr gelegen als mich die netten Kollegen von Sukhi  kontaktierten! Übrigens, "Sukhi" bedeutet glücklich auf Nepalesisch.

Ich brauchte auch gar nicht lange überlegen und habe mich spontan für einen einzigartigen, pinkfarbenen Patchwork Kelim, den es in mehreren Größen gibt, entschieden. Bei dieser Art von Teppichen werden die Flicken zunächst gebleicht und anschließend neu und monochromatisch eingefärbt. So entstehen hübsche Vintage Effekte, je nachdem wie der Teppich die Farbe annimmt. Die Teppiche werden nur auf Bestellung angefertigt. Jedes dieser Art ist ein Einzelstück!

A few months ago I was approached by the lovely people from Sukhi asking if I'd like to review one of their handmade patchwork kilims. Great timing, as I had been looking for a cheerful pop of color in our entrance area, so after researching the company (I hadn't heard of them before) I agreed. I decided on this bright patchwork rug in fuchsia, which comes in various sizes. This type of rug is made to order. The patches are overdyed in one solid color and wherever the fibres absorb more or less of it, a wonderful vintage effect is created. Patchwork kilims are available in an eco-friendly hemp version too! In fact, I have my eye on one for my studio #wishlist.

Die Teppichflicken werden von den Kunsthandwerkern individuell und nach einer ganz bestimmten Reihenfolge mit einer stabilen Knotentechnik sorgfältig vernäht. Die Teppiche sind auf der Rückseite mit einer langlebigen Baumwollbeschichtung ausgestattet. Die Patchwork Kelims gibt es übrigens auch in einer umweltfreundlichen Hanf-Ausführung.

Vor ein paar Tagen erhielt ich meinen für mich persönlich handgefertigten Teppich! Was mir gleich auffiel: die schön robuste, flach gewebte Struktur und einzigartige Patchworkoptik von floralen und grafischen Mustern. Jeder Teppich kommt mit einem Etikett wo der Name des Kunsthandwerkers draufsteht, der ihn gefertigt hat - so wird dem Kunden ermöglicht sich persönlich zu bedanken!

A few days ago my handmade patchwork rug arrived! I love the mix of floral and graphic patterns. So unique. No two are the same. Since it's flat woven it's the perfect option for our entrance area. But it would definitely brighten up a kid's room too. Each of these rugs arrive with a little label including the artisans name - an opportunity to send a personal note of appreciation if one feels so inclined.
This intrigued me so I researched a little more and was happy to learn that this company doesn't employ agents and works directly with the artisans who receive 2 - 3 x the average salary in their respective countries. The company offers flexible working hours, so that the artisans- many of them women with young children - are able to work from home and look after their children as well. I'm happy that this company engages in fairtrade practices. Plus they have a big sale going currently - don't miss the opportunity if you're in the market for a rug!

Abschließend möchte ich noch eine Sache erwähnen die mir bei Webshops immer am Herzen liegt: die Arbeitsethik. In diesem Fall freue ich mich zu berichten, dass Sukhi.de jegliche Kinderarbeit strikt ablehnt. Für einen anspruchsvollen Kunden wie mich ist das sehr wichtig! Zudem verzichtet der Webshop auf Zwischenhändler, so dass die Produkte zu deutlich niedrigeren Preisen angeboten werden können. Der Webshop arbeitet in den jeweiligen Ländern eng mit den KunsthandwerkerInnen zu fairen Arbeitsbedingungen zusammen. Oft sind die Arbeitszeiten flexibel, so dass der/die Kunsthandwerker/in auch von zuhause arbeiten und gleichzeitig auf die Kinder aufpassen kann. Darüber hinaus verdienen sie das 2 - 3fache des regionalen Durchschnittslohns. So wie jede Person, die kunsthandwerklich tätig ist sind auch diese Menschen mächtig stolz auf ihre handgefertigten Werke!

Fairytale Flower

Since I work from home my daily outfits are quite casual, but when I meet with sales reps, customers or go to Blogger events I love adding a bit of pizzazz in the form of handmade accessories. So when the lovely Gia of Fairytale Flower approached me about a collaboration I jumped at the chance, since I'm a longtime admirer of her Etsy shop!

Da ich von zuhause aus arbeite, trage ich überwiegend lässige Sachen. Umso mehr peppe ich gerne meine Ausgeh- bzw. Meeting-Outfits mit hübschen handgefertigten Accessoires auf. Neulich habe ich von der lieben Gia von Fairytale Flower  - ich bewundere ihren Etsy Shop schon seit langem - eine traumhaft schöne Blumenbrosche sowie Ohrstecker erhalten, und die möchte ich Euch heute zeigen!

Fairytale Flower offers a wide selection of handcrafted bridal hair accessories and flower crowns, as well as all manner of lovely floral items for the bridal party, such as hair clips for the bridesmaids and boutonnieres for the groomsmen. Each item is made with careful attention to detail and many are limited edition or one-of-a-kind creations. I received a gorgeous flower brooch (see pic below) made from raspberry and burgundy organza, delicate lace and shiny beads. It really pops on my teal cardigan, which I wore the other day during a lunch meeting.

Fairytale Flower bietet eine große Auswahl an handgefertigten Haarschmuck für Bräute sowie wunderschöne florale Haarclips oder Kämme für die Brautjungfern und Anstecksträußchen für die Trauzeugen. Jeder Artikel wird mit viel Liebe zum Detail hergestellt, oft in limitierter Auflage. Gia fertigt auch gerne nach Kundenwunsch extravagante Einzelstücke an. Von ihr habe ich diese bezaubernde Brosche (Bild unten) aus burgunder- und himbeerfarbenem Organza, zarter Spitze und glänzenden Perlen erhalten. Ich finde sie passt sehr gut zu meiner petrolfarbenen Strickjacke, die ich neulich bei einem Meeting trug.

I was shown how to make my first flower a few years ago and I was hooked straight away. Since then I have made hundreds upon hundreds of flowers and instead of getting tired of the process, the organic nature of the flowers themselves and the infinite variations that can be produced through changes in style, form and size make this a process that is infinitely interesting and satisfying.
I'm also in awe of the fact that someone will wear one of my flowers on any given day and it will make that day just a bit brighter, just a bit happier. If that day is a special occassion like a wedding or a prom, then the honour is double and I undertake my task with a magnified joy and pride.

Vor vielen Jahren erlernte ich, wie man Organza Blüten fertigt, und ich war sofort begeistert. Seitdem stelle ich unermüdlich hunderte von Blumen in unendlichen Variationen, Formen und Größen her. Für mich ist und bleibt der Prozess vom Design bis zur fertigen Blume unendlich interessant.
Ich freue mich sehr, dass Käufer aus aller Welt meine Kreationen tragen und wünsche mir, dass meine Artikel den Alltag ein wenig fröhlicher und bunter machen! Die Freude ist doppelt so groß, wenn meine Kunden die Blumen zu einem besonderen Anlass wie z.B. einer Hochzeit oder einem Abschlussball tragen!

I also received these adorable poppy earstuds. Aren't they cute? They are so delicate and light-weight, and the colour is perfect for this season. The flowers are attached to large pads which I appreciate, since they are way more comfortable to wear. The stud part has a little notch which will ensure the bolt part stays in place. Perfect!

Außerdem habe ich diese entzückenden Mohnblumen Ohrstecker bekommen. Sind sie nicht süß? Sie sind so zart und leicht, und die Farbe ist so toll für diese Saison. Die Blüten sind an großen Pads befestigt - so sind sie sehr angenehm zu tragen. Perfekt!

Pastel Roses + Tante Ema ® + Tutorial

This is my last post before I leave, but there's plenty to check out plus I added a fun little tutorial further down the post :)

Dies ist mein letzter Post bevor ich abreise, aber dafür gibt es eine Bilderflut und weiter unten noch ein süßes DIY :) Oben rechts im Bild sieht man die neue LOVEMAG - ich hatte sehr viel Glück, denn ich habe sie bei der lieben Claudia gewonnen!

As I mentioned before my friends over at Union Knopf (leading manufacturer for buttons + accessories) sent me a whole box full of goodies, including these fun novelty buttons (top) and woven ribbon (bottom) which I fell in love with straight away! These are part of the Tante Ema ® range and are a fun addition to any sewists stash :) The woven ribbon looked real pretty stitched onto a napkin, preferably on a thicker cotton, as the ribbon itself is quite thick.

Wie ich ja bereits erwähnt hatte, haben mir die netten Kollegen von Union Knopf ein Paket mit diversen Knöpfen und Webbändern zukommen lassen. In diese süßen Knöpfe (oben) und das Webband mit den Marmeladengläsern (unten) habe ich mich sofort verliebt! Diese sind aus der beliebten Tante Ema ® Kollektion. Passende Rosenknöpfe zeigte ich ja bereits hier. Das Webband lässt sich gut verarbeiten, jedoch ist es recht steif, besonders an den Kanten. Dies würde ich eher an mittelschweren Stoffen annähen.

I used the larger of the buttons to decorate my elastic jam jar covers (tutorial below). I liked that they are smooth and have only two holes instead of four. Also, the holes were large enough for the twine to pass through! They have a cute jam jar and mug design - perfect for sewing onto kitchen accessories :)

Meine Marmeladenglas-Häubchen mit Elastik (Anleitung nachfolgend) habe ich zusätzlich mit den großen Knöpfen dekoriert. Sie sind schön glatt, das Design ansprechend und besonders gefällt mir, dass die Löcher groß genug sind, um das Küchengarn durchzuziehen. Diese Knöpfe eignen sich sehr schön für Küchenaccessoires :)

And now I'd like to share my instructions for making custom-sized elastic jam jar covers! They will make your breakfast table look so inviting :)

Wie oben angekündigt gibt es jetzt meine Anleitung für die Häubchen mit Elastikband. Anhand meiner Anleitung könnt Ihr sie für jede Größe machen. Da sieht der Frühstückstisch gleich viel hübscher aus :)

You'll need // Ihr benötigt

small pieces of cotton fabrics // Reststücke Baumwollstoff

5mm wide elastic // 5mm breites Elastikband

twine // gezwirntes Garn

buttons with large holes // Knöpfe mit relativ großen Löchern

fabric marker // Stoffmarker

sewing machine + basic sewing kit // Nähma + Nähutensilien

compass // Zirkel

To make these you basically need to draw three circles. The circle in the center is the circumference of the lid (#1). Mark the center. Using the compass draw the second circle 1.5 cm down from the first one - this is where you will attach the elastic. Then draw a third circle 3 cm down from the second one - the dotted line is the cutting line.

Im Prinzip müsst Ihr nur drei Kreise zeichnen. Der kleinste ist der Kreisumfang des Deckels (#1). Die Mitte markieren. Mit Hilfe des Zirkels den zweiten Kreis zeichnen, und zwar 1,5 cm größer - dies ist die Linie wo später das Elastikband angenäht wird. Den dritten Kreis 3 cm größer zeichnen - an der gepunkteten Linie ausschneiden.

Before starting you may want to finish the edge either with a serger or by folding under and edge-stitching the fold down (#3). Next, measure the second line (grey line). Subtract 10 cm and cut elastic. In #4 I marked the points at each quarter. Do the same on the piece of elastic. Attach one end of the elastic at one point, then begin sewing using a small zigzag stitch. Stretch the elastic as you go (sew slowly) and remember that the marks on the elastic (#5) must match those on the circle. Stitch all the way around, overlap end and backstitch. Now you should have something that resembles a small showercap for a doll ;-)

Bevor Ihr das Elastikband annäht, den Rand versäubern (#3). Entweder wie hier mit der Overlock oder einschlagen und knappkantig feststeppen. Am zweiten Kreis jedes Viertel einzeichnen (#4). Auch am Elastikband die Viertel einzeichnen. Nun ein Ende an einer Markierung festnähen. Dann mit kleinem ZickZack Stich das Elastikband leicht gedehnt annähen (langsam nähen). Die Markierungen müssen aufeinander treffen (#5). Rundherum annähen und Enden überlappend feststeppen. Und fertig ist das Marmeladenglas-Häubchen welches einer kleinen Duschhaube für eine Puppe ähnelt ;-)

Lastly, cut a piece of twine wrap around top, loop through button and tie with a bow! Cute, huh?

Zuletzt ein Stück Zwirn abschneiden, um die Haube binden, durch den Knopf fädeln und zur Schleife binden! Süß, oder?

I had a lot of fun working with these items. I bet the buttons are going to be a hit with sewists of all ages!

Es hat Spaß gemacht die  Produkte zu verarbeiten. Diese Serie an Knöpfen und Webbändern wird bei vielen NäherInnen sicher sehr gut ankommen!

My friends over at Union Knopf (a leading button and trims manufacturer) recently sent me a box full of pretty buttons, trims and applique motifs. As you can imagine it was so much fun going through the products :) The company asked me to create something with these items and review them according to a specific list of criteria. I started off with a fun set of race car buttons, but I'll be posting about the other items in regular intervals, so check back often if you're a button fanatic like I am :)

Von den netten Kollegen bei Union Knopf (marktführender Hersteller von Knöpfen und Accessoires) habe ich neulich ein Paket, gefüllt mit hübschen Knöpfen, Borten und Applikationen erhalten. Von der Auswahl war ich total begeistert und darf nun die einzelnen Produkte "testen", d.h. nach meiner eigenen Vorstellung daraus etwas zaubern und nach bestimmten Kriterien bewerten. Ich werde also in regelmäßigen Abständen hier bei Duni's Studio über Knöpfe & Co. berichten - reinschauen lohnt sich, falls Ihr auch so "Knopf"-begeistert seid wie ich! Mein erstes Projekt beinhaltet diese lustigen Rennwagen Knöpfe mit passendem Aufbügelmotiv :)

 

In all of my 6+ years of blogging I don't think I've ever done a post on boy's clothes/accessories, as I don't generally sew kid's clothing (except for a few baby boy/girl items). But I wanted a bit of a challenge with my first project, hence the boy-themed buttons!

In den 6 + Jahren die ich schon blogge, habe ich soweit ich weiß keinen einzigen Beitrag über Sachen für Jungen gepostet, naja, mit Ausnahme von Babysachen. Aber mit diesem, meinem ersten Union-Knopf-Projekt, wollte ich mal etwas für mich Untypisches machen!

Zoooom! I decided to embellish a stripey boy's shirt with a couple of race car buttons. Of all the available colours I definitely prefer the primary ones: red, blue and yellow - these really pop. I consider these to be novelty buttons, ideal for embellishing belts, little boy's rucksacks or sportsbags as well as for use in mixed media or scrapbook projects! I find the unusual shape makes it a bit fiddly to handle as a regular button, say on a buttondown shirt or jacket. I used the iron-on applique as an elbow patch. I ironed it on according to manufacturer's instructions and it adhered perfectly to the fabric. If used on delicate fabrics, it is best to stitch the motif on instead of ironing.

Wrooom! Ich habe mich entschieden dieses Streifenshirt etwas aufzupimpen. Von den Knopffarben  gefallen mir besonders die Primärfarben Rot, Blau und Gelb. Die heben sich sehr schön vom Hintergrund ab und man sieht die Details besser als z.B. bei dem weißen oder grauen Knopf. Durch die ungewöhnliche Form finde ich diesen Knopf etwas fummelig in der Handhabung und würde ihn daher eher als Zierknopf, z.B. an einem Gürtel, Rucksack oder Turnbeutel verwenden. Ich kann mir durchaus vorstellen diese Knöpfe auch im Bastelbereich einzusetzen. Das Aufbügelmotiv gefiel mir besonders gut von der Optik her. Es ließ sich problemlos nach Anleitung des Herstellers aufbügeln - hier als Patch am Ellenbogen. Ansonsten kann man es selbstverständlich annähen; empfehlenswert bei empfindlichen Stoffen.

Today I have the great pleasure of introducing Maria of Maria Corcuera Jewelry & Design. Maria, who is originally from Monterrey, Mexico has been living/working in Germany since 2011. Maria has a passion for handcrafting chic, versatile jewelry of the highest quality. 1. please tell us about your craft. How did you start?

Erzähl uns, wie bist Du zu Deiner kreativen Arbeit gekommen?

I started designing and making jewelry in Mexico as a hobby, I had a full time job and had no extra time to invest in my jewelry. When we moved to Germany, I found myself jobless, in a completely new and unknown country with no knowledge of the language... that's when I decided making my hobby a full time job. Right now I have two online shops (Etsy and Dawanda) and I sell my designs in 9 brick-and-mortar stores in Germany. This is my job and my passion now, and I hope to share it with you!

Damals in Mexiko war die Schmuckherstellung mein Hobby neben meinem Vollzeitjob. Als wir dann nach Deutschland gezogen sind, einem für mich völlig neuen und unbekannten Land und ohne deutsche Sprachkenntnisse war ich plötzlich arbeitslos. Aus diesem Grund entschied ich mich mein Hobby zum Beruf zu machen. Derzeit betreibe ich zwei Online-Shops (Etsy und Dawanda) und darüber hinaus verkaufe ich meine Schmuckkollektion in 9 Läden in Deutschland. Ich arbeite leidenschaftlich gerne in meinem neuen Beruf als Schmuckdesignerin!

2. what does a "typical" work day look like for you?

wie sieht für Dich ein "typischer" Arbeitstag aus?

I normally wake up early, have breakfast, and with a cup of tea in hand, I will take my first look into my online shops. In the morning I always answer emails, prepare orders and revise any other important matters. I also do research for new jewelry trends, and start designing new pieces that will fit an everyday woman for an accesible price and great quality.

In the afternoon I usually go to the post office to ship packages, especially those that sell well in the stores. I take a look at the  inventory, sales or special requests, as well as search for new stores where my jewelry could be sold.

Ich stehe normalerweise recht früh auf, frühstücke, und mit einer Tasse Tee in der Hand, bestätige ich die Bestellungen in meinen Online-Shops. Grundsätzlich beantworte ich morgens alle wichtigen E-Mails, bearbeite Aufträge und kümmere mich um weitere wichtige Dinge im Arbeitsalltag. Ich halte mich über neue Schmuck-Trends auf dem Laufenden, entwerfe neue hochwertige Stücke und bemühe mich um ein gutes Preis-Leistungsverhältnis für meine anspruchsvollen Kundinnen.
Nachmittags bringe ich die Päckchen zur Post, insbesondere die Bestellungen der Läden. Dann mache ich Bestandsaufnahme, bearbeite spezielle Wünsche, und nebenher halte ich Ausschau nach neuen Läden, die eventuell Interesse an meiner Schmuckkollektion hätten.

3. how do you handle a creative block?

wie gehst Du mit einer kreativen Blockade um?

I normally don't have much creative blocks... I always find that when I do have them, it's more a concentration problem than a creative block per se. I normally think about what is taking my concentration away and try to "resolve" whatever it is, then keep working. Of course I have some better creative days that others :)

Ich gebe zu, dass ich selten welche habe! Falls es doch vorkommt ist es m.E. eher ein Konzentrationsproblem als eine kreative Blockade per se. Ich überlege was das Problem sein könnte und versuche es so gut es geht zu lösen, was auch immer es ist, dannach kann ich meistens wie gewohnt weiterarbeiten. Natürlich gibt es immer Tage an denen ich besonders und Tage an denen ich weniger kreativ bin :)

4. what is your most memorable experience concerning your business?

Beschreibe eines Deiner schönsten (Verkaufs)Erlebnisse.

I would definitely say that my feature in "Brigitte" Magazine is my most memorable experience...

My earrings were printed in June's magazine  (Nr. 14, page 57).

Etsy contacted me one day and asked for some pictures of one of my pieces for a magazine, but they told me they were not sure if I would be chosen to be published, and they never specified which Magazine it was.

It turns out that the magazine they wanted the pictures for was "Brigitte" magazine, one of Germany's favourite women's magazines. It's the largest women's magazine, with a circulation of around 800,000 and an estimated readership of 3,6 million... Now you can imagine my excitement when I found out! It seems that a reporter of the Magazine was invited to a Wedding Showroom in Hamburg where I was presenting two of my designs; that's where she saw my earrings and liked them enough to publish them on the bridal reportage of "Brigitte".

Ich würde sagen, dass mein Feature in der "Brigitte" Zeitschrift zu meinen schönsten Erlebnissen zählt...Meine Ohrringe wurden im Juni-Magazin (Nr. 14, Seite 57) abgebildet!
Ein paar Wochen vorher wurde ich von Etsy kontaktiert und sie fragten nach ein paar Fotos meiner Schmuckstücke für eine Zeitschrift, aber sie sagten mir, sie könnten nicht garantieren, dass sie veröffentlicht werden. Außerdem wollten sie den Namen der Zeitschrift nicht verraten.
Später stellte sich heraus, dass sie die Bilder für die "Brigitte" haben wollten, eines der in Deutschland beliebtesten Frauenzeitschriften mit einer Auflage von rund 800.000 und einer geschätzten Leserschaft von 3,6 Millionen... ihr könnt Euch sicherlich vorstellen wie aufgeregt ich war!
Es scheint, dass eine Redakteurin des Magazins zu einer Hochzeitsmesse in Hamburg, wo ich einen Stand hatte, auf meine Schmuckkollektion aufmerksam geworden ist. Anscheinend fand sie die Ohrringe schön genug, um sie in der Braut Reportage in der "Brigitte" zu veröffentlichen!
