Colorful Abstract Art Journal Page with Bird Sketch

Hello lovelies!

I still don't feel great, unfortunately. I did finally see a doctor last week to rule out pneumonia and he prescribed some medication to help alleviate the symptoms. Other than that he told me to take it easy and get some bed rest.

If you've known me through my blog any amount of time you'll know that it's almost impossible for me to lay in bed with my mind in overdrive. My "to-do-list" is stretching ever longer and I am feeling quite antsy.

Then I remembered that before I fell ill I filmed a little tutorial, but only uploaded it now. 

 

At the time I was tired of the gray weather that I decided to bring in some bright colors on the page to cheer me up! In the above collage you can see some of the process that went into creating this page. I used various tools for the background, such as a brayer and stamps and also a watersoluble pencil to make random marks. 

The little birdy is a sketch I made on a separate piece of paper, cut out and glued to the page along with some strips of collage and random word snippets. 

This style is more abstract than my usual and I utilized the white space. I explain this in the short video above. It's a simple page, but in the end it really did cheer me up with all the yummy bright colors!

Easy Mixed Media Tags

Hello crafty friends!

Making tags is one of my favorite paper crafts. Type "gift tags" in the search bar at the top right of this blog and plenty more tag tutorials will show up.

Today I am creating my tags from scratch or rather from one of my gelli prints. The paper I used is 160 gsm, as I find this is a good weight for making tags. Scroll down to watch the video, which also explains how I made the gelli prints. Be sure to read the info in the description box as well. Today's craft is all about layering. I adhered tiny paper scraps including ticket stubs, which I found in the back of a drawer the other day. Looking at the date...wow, they are so old :)

Here's a step-by-step instruction - unfortunately it was an overcast day, so the photos aren't the best.  Scroll down to watch the video, which is a lot brighter.

Step One: measure a rectangle 7 x 14 cm on the gel print, mark with a pencil and cut along the lines. 

Step Two: flip the tag over and using a set square align the top edge with a parallel line and until the corner meets the edge. Mark with a pencil and snip off. 

Step Three: Add stamping

Step Four: Add marks with crayons

Step Five: Glue down pieces of collage.

Step Six: Embellish with a focal image (leaves, flowers, animals, words etc.)

Step Seven: Loop a ribbon through the hole

Tip: Plan a gelli printing session a day or two beforehand, then flatten the prints with a stack of heavy books. This way they are ready to go when you decide to make those tags. Happy crafting!

Messy Art Journal Page

Hi everyone!

Those who have followed me on my art journey for a while know that I simply love mixed media and creating "messy" art in my art journal. There is nothing more satisfying than playing with paint, stamps, stencils and collage to get unique results. 

I enjoy applying acrylic paint with a brayer. This way you can quickly cover the blank surface. Create interesting texture by overlapping the paint.

Continue adding layers. Try using different tools, such as a palette knife, stencils and in the above example, a rough textured piece of string dipped in black ink! If you are curious to find out how I made this effect, you are welcome to watch the whole process in the video below:

Monday Moodboard

We've had an incredibly wet start to the summer season. I'm back to wearing cardigans. Boo. It doesn't help that I have a couple of half-finished summer projects waiting to be photographed. Oh well. Meanwhile here's my summer-y moodboard. Hope you like it!

I've been looking for signs of spring, but the early flowers seem to have a hard time pushing through the frozen earth. Winter has returned in full force. My antidote to that is colour!
