Dirndl ~ ♥ Duni-style ♥

 Hi friends!           Hallo Mädels!

With the drastic drop in temperature it seems Fall has arrived early over here. And although it might seem strange, I've already seen racks of Dirndl costumes for Oktoberfest displayed in stores! I'm sure plenty of crafty ladies will be getting a head start on making their own as well. If you're not familiar with what a traditional Dirndl costume is, please check out Wikipedia. Also, they are expensive. Personally, I've never owned one, and since I lack a certain "voluptuousness" I'm not sure it would suit me anyway ;-) Besides, I'm an unconventional dresser. So, when my friends over at Union Knopf, the leading German button and accessories manufacturer, sent me a box containing all sorts of fashion accoutrement associated with country-style clothing I was a bit stumped :) But then I thought why not use the hardware to make a non-traditional, but just as cute Duni-style outfit? :)

Duni-style eben :)

The box contained antiqued metal hardware, such as buttons, hooks, eyelets, charms etc. as well as satin and velvet ribbons and traditional appliqué motifs. Motifs include hearts, florals, boots, scrolls and pretzels :) The Edelweiss flower is also a popular motif! I especially liked the teal satin ribbon and large metal heart pendant!
*

This choker-style necklace is super easy to make. Simply cut a length of 11mm wide satin ribbon about 46 cm. Attach the heart pendant with a large jump ring. I improvised a unique closure solution - fold over the ends and stitch on a scroll-shaped hook on one end and a cute rose button on the other. As it so happens, the hook fits perfectly around the rose!
Passt genau!

I've owned this little black knitted bolero jacket for over a decade, however the hooks and eyelets had come off at some point, so it just collected dust in the back of my closet. Until now! The metal rose buttons were just perfect. They had the right size and were not too heavy. I sewed on four of these. Further down this post you'll see how I used them to close the jacket :)
*

Pink flats embellished with metal heart buttons!
Pinke Ballerinas mit großen Herzknöpfen aufgehübscht!

I made a bag to go with the outfit! It is made from black canvas and can be carried as a clutch or shoulder bag, as the strap is detachable. I embellished with teal coloured lace and a badge for that Alpine look :)
*

I embellished the strap with pink ribbon bows.
*

I made this black tiered skirt quite a while ago in the same style as this one, except it is 3/4 length and  the bottom ruffle is narrower but twice as ruched. For this Dirndl project I simply embellished the hemline with the teal ribbon. I really like the way it looks now!
*

As you can see I picked a teal/pink theme. I tied those four rose buttons with 6 mm satin ribbon - a nod towards the traditional laced bodice usually found on Dirndl costumes. I completed the outfit with a regular white blouse and handmade pink rose earstuds!
*

Working with these country-style inspired accessories turned out to be quite fun! The buttons are well made and sturdy while the iron-on appliqué motifs will provide instant Alpine charm on bags, jackets or apron pockets! Do you like country-style clothing? Do you own a bought or handmade Dirndl costume? Leave me a link in the comment if you did - I'd love to see it!

    Chrissi

  8. You are so creative! Love the bag!! And the necklace is great.
That skirt was a lot of work!!!
It will be Oktoberfest before we know it! There are rural communities in the Midwest that celebrate Oktoberfest.

  12. Hallo liebe Duni,

  13. I really really like that bag! I once found a brooch at a fleamarket, with little charms attached to it that would match the bag perfectly. I still regret that I didn't treat myself to that brooch...

  15. I love the necklace! The pretzel buttons I see in the background of a shot are amusing, too. Believe it or not, my mom made my sister a Dirndl a few years ago!

  16. Liebe Duni,

  24. Duni!! How could I miss this post.I now regret not visiting your blog over the past weeks. You know how much I admire your work.

I agree and support your self advocacy of being an unconventional dresser! You are one of the few women I know who can embody such claim with elegance and character.

    You really nailed the challenge!
