Sunday Spotlight: MissusD

Today I have the pleasure to introduce to you the artisan Kathleen, who owns MissusD and MissusDPaperie on Etsy. Kat, who hails from sunny Singapore, currently lives in Munich, Germany. She's an architect turned fibre artist with emphasis on crochet. In her main shop you will find a variety of limited edition handmade designer art toys and objects for Kidults as well as beautiful crocheted Vintage lace covered rocks. Her second shop specializes in printable stationery and digital art.

When Kat moved to Germany she didn't know exactly what she would be doing, but she definitely needed to express her creativity in some way. Every day brings new inspiration, and she likes to act on what she gets inspired by. This is reflected in the diversity of items in her shop(s). Listening to feedback of her fan base has helped her slowly understand her signature style. She says it's a wonderful thing to interact with her audience using her work! And it has actually widened her circle in Germany. She came to this country without any contacts or business experience. In the course of her work she has come to understand what it takes to build a creative business and how she would like to interact with people. Looking back, she has really lived her life passionately, and that is the most valuable part of doing what she is doing now.

Her main obstacle is the language barrier in Germany. She overcomes it with a lot of bravado and help from her friends. Of course, it also helps that a lot of Germans speak English well!
For all those planning to set up their own handmade business, Kat kindly shares this advice:

If you are passionate, never give up. Setting up a business is not easy, especially if you are in Handmade. Don't sell yourself short. Learn from the experience of others. A little bit of humility and sincerity often opens up doors and hearts. In Handmade, mutual support is very important, keep encouraging each other!

Heute im Rampenlicht ~ Kathleen, kurz Kat auch unter MissusD bekannt, ihrem gleichnamigen Shop. Die aus dem sonnigen Singapur stammende Architektin lebt derzeit mit ihrem Mann in München. Bei ihrer Ankunft in Deutschland war ihr noch nicht ganz klar wie ihre berufliche Zukunft aussehen möge, jedoch wusste sie, dass sie kreativ tätig sein wollte. Vor diesem Hintergrund gründete sie gleich zwei Shops - im ersten findet man liebevoll gehäkelte Eigenkreationen; in ihrem zweiten Shop namens MissusDPaperie spezialisiert sie sich auf ausdruckbare Papierwaren und Kunstdrucke. Die handwerklich begabte Kat verleiht  ihren ulkigen Amigurumis eine Einzigartigkeit, die besonders "Kidults" (Kunstwort, Kombination aus Kind und Erwachsener) anspricht.  Darüber hinaus ummantelt sie leidenschaftlich gerne Kieselsteine mit Vintage Spitze. 

Sie liebt den Austausch mit ihrem Kundenstamm. Das Feedback, dass sie erhält motiviert sie zu neuen Kreationen und so hat sie über die Jahre ihren eigenen Stil geprägt. Rückblickend sagt sie, dass sie immer ein aktives und mit Leidenschaft gefülltes Leben geführt hat, und diese positive Lebenseinstellung fließt nahtlos in ihr Kleinunternehmen.  Als Hindernis empfindet sie in einem fremden Land ein Kleinunternehmen zu führen  die Sprachbarriere, aber diese meistert sie mutig und mit Hilfe ihrer Freunde. Natürlich hilft es, dass so viele Deutsche Englisch sprechen, erzählte sie mir mit einem Schmunzeln! Hier noch ein paar Tips, die sie anderen Gewerblern im "Handmade Business" mit auf dem Weg geben möchte: tu das was Du tust mit Leidenschaft, verkaufe Dich nicht unter Wert, lerne von den Erfahrungen anderer, Bescheidenheit und Aufrichtigkeit öffnen so manche Türen und Herzen (potentieller Kunden), und Erfolg im "Handmade" beruht oft auf gegenseitige Unterstützung!

Tanya Whelan is a US fabric and sewing pattern designer currently living in Belgium, and some of you might know that I adore her fabric collections. Most of my Peridot line is made from her fabrics! I was thrilled when I found out about her new book. It's due for release end of this month. Here's the blurb from Amazon:

Hello.                     Hallo.

the week has only just begun and I'm already tired out. Today too many things happened at once and all of them needed my attention. I'll let you in on a secret ~ I'm not a very good multitasker. I much prefer doing things one after the other, but alas it wasn't to be today...

Mädels, heute war nicht mein Tag. Irgendwie kam alles auf einmal und alles musste jetzt und gleich erledigt werden. Puh, die Woche hat gerade erst angefangen und ich bin schon erledigt!

I'm going to show you a couple of things that I found at craft and fleamarkets, and that always help to cheer me up! Many moons ago my favourite teacher gave me a knitting dolly. Who remembers these? Mine was blue with a red hat and I loved it! I spent hours knitting the wool into long strings, and I do believe that all of my family received coasters that Christmas! So when I spotted this knitting dolly I knew I had to have it for the sake of nostalgia. I do plan on using it when I have the time...

Kennt ihr noch die Strickliesel? Meine Lehrerin hatte mir damals (da war ich acht) so eine geschenkt. Die war blau mit einem roten Hut. Ich habe sie über alles geliebt und konnte stundenlang damit diese "Wollwürstchen" stricken. Ihr wisst schon was ich meine, oder?
Wenn ich mich recht erinnere haben meine Familienmitglieder das Jahr zu Weihnachten alle spiralenförmig zusammengenähte Untersetzer bekommen... ;-) Ich habe keine Ahnung wo meine Strickliesel geblieben ist, aber eins wußte ich als ich neulich diese hier entdeckte - die muß ich haben. Und ja, wenn ich mal viel Zeit habe werde ich es nochmal ausprobieren...

Cleaning my chest of drawers the other day I found these half forgotten Vintage hankies! These are destined for a craft project!

Beim Aufräumen meiner Schubfächer habe ich diese wunderschönen Vintage Taschentücher wiederentdeckt! Diese sind für mein nächstes DIY Projekt bestimmt!

I hope these pictures brought about a smile or a nice memory from your childhood. I feel better already just looking at my "Strickliesel" ! But before I can even think about trying it out I must head to the kitchen to cook dinner. Will this day never end?! Hope your Monday was less stressful.

Und wie gefallen euch die Dinge? Vielleicht haben ja die Fotos die eine oder andere schöne Kindheitserinnerung geweckt. Auf jeden Fall hoffe ich, dass euer Montag weniger hektisch war wie meiner. Und der Tag scheint kein Ende zu nehmen, denn jetzt muss ich in Richtung Küche das Abendessen zaubern :)
