City Trip [Berlin]

Spontaneously taking a trip up to Berlin, capital of Germany, is a big deal for me - I'm not a spontaneous person. I like to plan things way in advance. Nevertheless, at the beginning of this year I promised myself to add some spontaneity to my life! In hindsight, maybe it wasn't such a good idea after all...more on that later.
*

We arrived pretty early. After a quick breakfast we hit the streets. Little did we know that it was the day the German soccer team arrived back. Apparently a huge event was planned later that morning around the Brandenburger Gate. And there I was wondering why I was seeing a lot of people wearing DFB T-shirts and assorted fan paraphernalia :)
*

Of course, no trip to Berlin in complete without a visit to the famous KaDeWe shopping center. Check out this building's interesting history that starts in 1905.

Hey look, primary colours! * Schaut mal, Primärfarben!

Some you probably recognize the following photo from my instagram, but I had the most delicious sweet potato fries in this lounge. Wish I had ordered a second portion :)
*

A Keith Haring sculpture taken through a dirty bus window.

After a bit of sightseeing and shopping everything went pear-shaped. Without going into too much detail, let's just say it involved an ambulance, a hospital and a. l o t. o f. b l o o d. It was a scary experience and naturally our visit was cut short. This just goes to show that sometimes things happen when you least expect and for which you are not prepared. I'm just amazed we stayed pretty calm through the ordeal.

Sehr. viel. Blut. Tja, solche Dinge kommen immer unverhofft. Natürlich haben wir die Reise abgebrochen. Aber keine Sorge, alles ist wieder gut.

I don't think I'll be taking any spontaneous trip anytime soon... Anyway, thanks for reading along. Hope you have a wonderful day!

Snapping pics from an open-top double decker bus, while its cruising through Berlin results in some space agey type photos, don't you think?

I hope you're enjoying your summer so far...have a terrific weekend!

Habt ein tolles Wochenende! Genießt die Sonne!

Twitter and other news

Thanks to Sharla's comment on my previous post I am now a twitterer...tweeter? Whatever. I've joined Twitter. You can find me @PeriDotbyDuni (capital D's) or click the pink Twitter button in the column on the left-hand side of my blog. Fear not!! Except for the occasional whine about the weather I will mostly tweet about blog and shop-related stuff.
Through the Hello Etsy newsletter I've received a bit of exciting news...Etsy is planning a huge event this year: A summit on small business and sustainability. Apart from the topic being of high interest to me, what is really, really amazing is that it is being held right here in Germany! In Berlin. Tickets have not been issued yet, and no word on how much it will cost either - hopefully not over the top - but I have marked my calendar in red. This is just too good an opportunity to pass up!
Plus I get to stay with my mom, who lives about a two-hour train ride away, and maybe even meet up with a couple of old school friends who live there.
As far as I know Etsy is planning similar events all over the world.

In shop news, I have added capri pants. Some say cropped pants or bloomers. Anyway, the one's I made stop at mid-calf, are made from an organic cotton sourced in Denmark, and each pant hem is embellished with romantic pastel pink lace. Curious? Check them out here!

have a great weekend everybody!

East-west German unity

Today is the 20 year anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Heads of government from all over the world, including US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, have gathered in Berlin to commemorate this momentous occasion. It is indeed a day for celebration, but let us not forget that atleast 140 people died at the hands of former East German border troops, simply for choosing freedom. My mother was one of the lucky ones.
