Studio Makeover

Hello lovely creatives!

Those that have been following me for a long time may remember, that we've been fixing up, renovating and generally updating our house, including the garden. To date this has been our biggest project. We started with the garden in 2018 and apart from planting some shrubs and flowers, we are pretty much done now! Our main goal was to make it low maintenance.

Here's the view from my studio:

The house, which was built in the 50s is another matter. The last time it was renovated was in the 70s, complete with 70s decor! We've been updating the upper rooms slowly for at least a decade - then last year it was finally time to relocate my then studio to a new space downstairs. This coincided with my transitioning from fabrics/sewing crafts to mixed media art and developing and teaching private workshops. The designated space needed new flooring above all. I found some suitable floor boards in a vintage grey, which are durable and easy to clean. In the below pic you can see how it looked before and after. The door was still missing in the second pic.

I'm super pleased with the flooring, but of course, most of all I'm loving the big garden-facing windows, letting in so much more light than in my previous space upstairs.

The two white cupboards above are the only furniture items that I bought. I was lucky that they had been on sale at the time! I placed a bookcase in between - it's a bit shorter, but overall it doesn't look too bad. All other furniture is from my old studio and/or repurposed from other rooms. The big work table used to be my cutting table from when I still had my shop. Now it's perfect for my art making, as I prefer making art standing up. Plus it's where I make video tutorials for my YouTube channel. My set up is really simple, but it works just fine.

As you can imagine this is my absolute favorite place to be. I like to sit in the chair in the corner by the window in the early mornings with a cup of tea and look out into the garden, listening to bird song. It's here that new ideas form. Below is a short clip of my art studio. I've hung some of my abstract pieces on the walls.

And this final clip is from my beloved Leo, two weeks before he passed. He used to hang out by my studio. I miss seeing his cute, fluffy face.

I hope you enjoyed a behind the scenes look at my new studio. I've been told mine looks very clean and organized :) Well, I don't believe artist's studios necessarily need to be cluttered, even though that is the general vision people have. What's your take? Tidy or messy?

Duni's Studio - one year later :)

Some of you might remember that I started my studio renovation over a year ago. I'm pleased to say that it's finally, well almost, completed!

Die Renovierung meines Studios ist nun, nach über einem Jahr, endlich abgeschlossen! Naja, fast.

In this post the main work, such as the new windows, shelving and big furniture pieces had been installed except for the partition I mentioned. A partition is necessary to divide my work space from the reading/TV area. After a bit of brainstorming I found a simple yet functional and budget friendly solution: sliding doors. These were installed a couple of days ago! I chose a white textured surface that would blend in well with the surrounding wall. The sliding door has a damper to ensure it closes softly against the wall. I posted a pic of the whole thing on Instagram, but it's a bit blurry as I was so excited :) Below you can see the sliding part. The other part is fixed.

 

In diesem Post zeigte ich Euch die neuen Fenster, Regale und Tische. Außerdem sollte noch eine Art Trennwand her. Diese sollte möglichst unauffällig sowie kostengünstig sein. Ich entschied mich für eine Schiebetürkonstruktion und vor ein paar Tagen wurde sie eingebaut. Die Oberfläche ist weiß strukturiert, welche gut zur Wand passt. Die Schiebetür ist auf einer Seite fixiert und nur die rechte Seite mit Dämpfer lässt sich fast lautlos auf und zu schieben. Auf Instagram könnt Ihr die ganze Tür sehen, leider etwas verschwommen - ich war so aufgeregt :) Oben seht Ihr den schiebbaren Teil der Tür.

Above you can see the fixed part of the door. Since it's right in front of my sewing area it lends itself perfectly to mood or swatch boards! Currently I only have one lone card up there, but I'm sure there will be more...

Dies ist der feste Teil der Tür. Da ich hier meine Näharbeiten erledige eignet sich die Fläche bestens als "Inspirationswand". Momentan hängt da nur eine einsame Karte, aber das ändert sich sicher bald...

I'm basically all set. I really LOVE working in this room. In the cupboard above I keep the fabrics which I mostly use for my Peridot line. There are lots more behind the closed doors :) The only thing that is still missing is a flatweave rug. Even after a whole year of searching I haven't been successful - either they are too expensive or ugly. So, if any of you know where I can find a rectangular rug in a neutral colour - perhaps with a stripey pattern - at a reasonable price, please let me know!!

Mein Arbeits/Nähzimmer ist so gut wie fertig. Ich LIEBE es hier zu arbeiten. Oben im Schrank seht Ihr die Stoffe, die ich hauptsächlich für mein Peridot Label verwende. Unten, hinter den Türen sind noch viele mehr :) Das Einzigste was in meinem Zimmer noch fehlt ist ein flachgewebter Teppich, möglichst rechteckig, grau oder hellbeige - eventuell mit subtilen Streifen - und erschwinglich. Beim "Schweden" war ich schon und bin leider nicht fündig geworden. Vielleicht wisst Ihr ja wo ich noch suchen könnte? Eventuell online? Bin für jeden Tipp dankbar!!

Where Bloggers Create

Hi everybody! Many of you know that I have been in the process of renovating my studio space, and this is my first time participating in this fantastic blog party hosted by the lovely Karen @My Desert Cottage. My studio is by no means finished, but I have made progress since my last update here.

Hallo, meine Lieben! Viele von Euch wissen inzwischen, dass ich mitten in der Arbeitszimmer/Nähatelier-Renovierung stecke. Noch ist es nicht fertig, aber es sieht auf jeden Fall schon besser aus als hier. Dieses Jahr nehme ich auch zum ersten Mal an dieser tollen Aktion teil (siehe oben). Ins Leben gerufen wurde sie durch die liebe Karen von My Desert Cottage.

Okay, here goes...

First up is my stockroom. This is where I keep the fabrics and other supplies. The middle of the room is taken up by a large cutting table.

Also, hier ist nun mein aufgeräumter Lagerraum für die Stoffballen und diverses Zubehör. Meine fertig genähte Ware lagere ich in einem der Schränke. In der Mitte steht ein großer Schneidetisch.

Here is my desk in the adjacent room with the recently installed new windows. This is where I do all my administrative work, i.e. take care of the business side of my online shops and, of course, blog! As you can see I like my desktop to be clear of clutter. The handmade memoboard is the newest addition. It now takes pride of place on the wall above my monitor!

Hier, vor den neuen Fenstern im angrenzenden Raum steht nun mein neuer Schreibtisch. Hier arbeite ich und von hier aus wird natürlich auch gebloggt! Ich mag keine Papierberge - alles was erledigt ist wird abgeheftet. Der Rest wandert in die Officebox links neben dem Monitor.  Die handgefertigte Pinwand ist neu dazugekommen. Sie hängt nun an der Wand über dem Bildschirm!

And finally...the design and sewing area to the right of my desk. This is where the action takes place. Although you can only see a bit of the table it stretches along the entire length of that side!

Und zum guten Schluß der Design- und Nähbereich rechts vom Tisch. Ihr seht hier nur einen kleinen Teil des Tisches, welcher über zwei Meter lang ist!

I am really pleased the way it's all coming together. Now that I have an extra large table I am able to sew a lot more - and that's the whole point of this renovation project! Of course, there is still lots to do. I haven't found a rug yet, nor any wall art. There's the radiator covers to install plus a wooden sliding door partition and the list goes on. I'm hoping it will all be done by early Fall at the latest. Fingers crossed :)

Soweit, so gut. Jetzt da ich diesen riesen Tisch habe, habe ich die Möglichkeit mehr Nähprojekte umzusetzen. Und das war ja auch Sinn und Zweck der Sache! Die Renovierung ist aber noch lange nicht abgeschlossen. Ich habe noch keinen geeigneten Teppich gefunden und schöne Wanddeko suche ich auch noch, aber vor allem muss noch eine Trennwand eingebaut werden. Es ist natürlich eine Frage des Geldes, und daher wird es noch ein paar Monate dauern, bis alles fertig ist :)

Studio Renovation - Update

In between visits to my mom and work I have been making progress on my studio renovation project - albeit slowly. What's been done so far:

Vor vielen Wochen kündigte ich eine Renovierung meines Studios an. Aus Zeitmangel geht es leider nur langsam voran. Nachfolgend ein kleiner Einblick:

side note: the installation process was a really messy business. Plenty of hammering, drilling and banging...plus construction dust EVERYWHERE.

nebenbei bemerkt: der Einbau dieser Fenter war der absolute Horror. Ein Glück das wir alles, wirklich alles mit Planen abgedeckt hatten, denn der Baustaub verbreitete sich ÜBERALL.

Step Two: Meanwhile, the area around the windows have been plastered and covered with wallpaper. We finished painting both rooms in a creamy white last week

Zweiter Schritt: Mein Mann hat in der Zwischenzeit die Wände um die neuen Fenster verputzt und anschließend tapeziert. Letzte Woche wurden beide Räume in einem cremigen Weiß neu gestrichen.

I'm so glad the messy part of the renovation is over! Now it's just a matter of reorganizing the stockroom and studio. The last bit will be the best: decorating! Can't wait!

Bin ich froh, dass der "dreckige" Teil der Renovierung erledigt ist! Als nächstes werde ich den Lagerraum auf Vordermann bringen und meinen Arbeitsplatz neu organisieren. Wenn alles soweit funktionstüchtig ist geht es ans Dekorieren! Darauf freue ich ich am meisten!
