Design Element [ Weltkarten ]

Hallo, ihr Lieben!       Hello lovelies!

Weltkarte Leinwand / Canvas

At school, geography was one of my favorite subjects! I've always been interested in the different countries and cultures. I remember studying the colorful atlas extensively and often imagined what it would be like living in one or the other country. Later I was even able to experience it, because at the time my job led me to the different corners of the world! So far, I've lived and worked in seven countries, met plenty of nice people from different cultures (some of them have become good friends), tried lots of authentic food and took part in traditional festivities. One thing in particular has become clear to me - if one is open-minded, flexible and willing to let go of a few old habits - home can be practically anywhere :)

Weltkarte Tapete
Weltkarte Holz
I had been looking for a suitable wall decoration above my bureau (see picture at the top). So when I was approached by the lovely people over at Weltkarten.de to collaborate I simply couldn't refuse - I happen to love world maps as a design element! However, I only have limited wall space above my bureau, since it sits under a sloped roof. So I decided to get a small map on canvas. I especially like  the fresh mint with watercolor effect ... which matches my pencils and the wrap-around style of canvas. The details on this map are subtle - exactly the look I was going for, as I wanted more of an art piece rather than one of those maps where you stick pins in the places you've been (although they do offer these as well!) There are  plenty of high contrast and graphic maps available too (see above). Currently, this website which was launched in the Summer of 2016 ships to Germany and Austria only, but once they gain popularity they might expand to include overseas countries!

I'm really pleased with the look of this canvas map. And it gets me dreaming again of all the places I still want to visit, like Cuba, Japan and Portugal (the last one is definitely feasible). Which countries are on your wish list? Thanks for reading along!

  1. Hallo liebe Duni,

  2. Beautiful, dreamy choice! It matches your style perfectly too. :) How amazing it must have been to live in so many different countries. We are a very adaptable culture when we want to be. :) Cuba is on our list too. Jim's dad was born there and he still has an uncle there. Hopefully someday. We will have to learn to Cuban Salsa first!

  4. Lovely choice! When I was a kid I had a globe and I loved to look up all the countries and dream of visiting one day. Right now I'm chicken to travel outside of the US but I'd love to visit Italy.

  7. I always think it's interesting how many people want to visit Cuba because my in-laws have said they have no desire to go back! It isn't a place with happy memories for them (forced conscription into the Army and things like that). Some family from Cuba was able to visit them recently, though, so that's a nice effect of changing travel policies. I'd like to revisit several Northern European countries now that I'm old enough to remember them (I visited as an 18 month old!). I'd also love to see several of the Eastern European countries. Our next international trip will probably be Scotland when my sister get's married there next summer or the year after. It's an oldie but a goodie - I lived there for a while as a child.

    1. I totally get that people who were born / grew up in Cuba don't have a desire to go back! For the rest of us I guess it's part curiosity to visit a country that has seen more than its share of turbulent times.

  8. Liebe Duni,
