A - Z of essential oils { Ylang-Ylang }

At the beginning of my essential oils guide I mentioned I wouldn't be listing all of the essential oils, just those that are most beneficial for common ailments and which (except for Rose) aren't too costly. So today's post is actually the last in this series! I always have to smile when I come across Ylang-Ylang (pronounced ee-lang ee-lang) as it sounds so musical :) The flowers from which the oil is obtained are cultivated in Indonesia, the Philippines and Comoro Islands. Ylang-Ylang has a fresh, floral, slightly sweet aroma and is most commonly used as a middle note in perfumes.

In aromatherapy Ylang-Ylang is a natural sedative and relaxant and is used to treat stress, depression and high blood pressure. But since this is the last post in this series I'd like to share a "recipe" for making your own all natural perfume! The general formula for a light perfume is 15% essential oils (neat) to 80% alcohol / 5% distilled water.

All natural floral perfume

You will need: pharmaceutical alcohol, distilled water and any of the following of pure essential oils.

Base notes: Vetiver, Sandalwood, Patchouli, Cedarwood
Middle notes: Ylang-Ylang, Geranium, Jasmine, Rose
Top notes: Bergamot, Lavender, Lemon, Neroli

Top notes are those that evaporate most quickly and therefore the ones you smell first. These will fade to leave the middle and base notes. Use several essential oils or just one from each list to formulate your own perfume! It's a good idea to start with a base note. It is also possible to use the same essential oil for middle and top notes. It really depends on your preferences. Add your essential oils to the alcohol and water base in a sterilized bottle. Swirl the mixture and leave it for at least a week before pouring through a filter into an opaque bottle fitted with a spray cap. Have fun experimenting and enjoy the scent!

Basisnote: Vetiver, Sandelholz, Patchouli, Zedernholz
Herznote: Ylang-Ylang, Geranium, Jasmin, Rose
Kopfnote: Bergamot, Lavendel, Zitrone, Neroli

**while beneficial, essential oils do not substitute the diagnosis or treatment of a qualified medical practitioner.

    Liebe Grüße an Dich!
