Frida meets Karneval - Part One

So, yesterday I revealed my Frida Kahlo carneval costume. Today and in the coming week(s) I will be sharing the instructions right here on Duni's Studio! It would have been way too much to share in one go, so I'll show you bit by bit. As promised each tutorial is really simple, but the skirt involves a bit more time and uses up a fair amount of fabric. That is why we're going to start with that!

You'll need // Ihr braucht

sewing machine, basic sewing kit
thin cotton fabric: three coordinating prints, each at least 1 m
matching thread, 2 cm wide soft elastic, button assortment, webbing, trims
*
Nähmaschine, Standard Nähutensilien
Baumwollpoplin: drei aufeinander abgestimmte Muster, je ca. 1 m
farblich passendes Nähgarn, weicher Gummibund 2 cm breit, Knopfsortiment, Gurtband, Bänder

please excuse the cowboy boots ;-)

The skirt is made of six rectangles which when sewn together consist of panels A, B & C. The bottom panel is embellished with handsewn fabric yoyos all around. Add a belt with ribbon tassles if you like!
*

Step One // Schritt Eins

First, to determine panel A you'll need to crunch some numbers. Wrap your measuring tape around your high hip (that's where your hipbone is) and write that number down. Then use this formula:

(hip measurement) ÷ 2 x 1,5 = width + 2 cm seam allowance

Write that number down. Now measure from your hip bone to the middle of your thigh + 5 cm. This is your length. Write that number down. You should now have two numbers to make up a rectangle!
Cut two pieces from the fabric A.
*

Aus Stoff A zwei Rechtecke schneiden.

Step Two // Schritt Zwei

Place rectangles one on the other, right sides facing. Pin the short sides and sew. All seam allowances are 1 cm. Finish both edges with a small zig zag stitch or serger if you have one. Iron the seams toward the back. (in this case, front and back look the same, so just remember to iron all seams in one direction).

Cut a piece of elastic to fit snugly (or loosely if you prefer) at your waist. Set aside. To make the waistband casing, fold under 0,5 cm and iron. Fold again at 2,5 cm. Edge stitch down around entire circumference leaving a small gap to insert the elastic. Using a large safety pin pull elastic through casing, overlap ends and stitch together securely. Close the gap. You should now have a micro-mini that looks like this:

*

Embellish with trims if you like // wer mag näht noch eine Bommelborte dran (5 cm vom Rand)

Step Three // Schritt Drei

Put on the micro mini. Decide where you'd like panel B to end from bottom edge of panel A.This is your length. Write this number down + 2 cm seam allowance. Measure the width of panel B by adding 8 cm to the measurement of panel A. Write this number down. You now have two numbers to make up a rectangle. Cut two pieces from fabric B. Stitch the side seams as in step two. Finish and iron towards the back. Machine baste (longest stitch) along one edge. Pull thread to lightly gather the edge. Slip panel A inside panel B, right sides together and seams aligning. Make sure they are facing the same direction! Spread gathers evenly and stitch them together. Finish edges with zig zag stitches or serger. Turn right side out and iron seam downwards.
*
Teil A rechts auf rechts in Teil B stecken. Absteppen. Zusammengefasst versäubern. Rock wenden und Naht nach unten bügeln.

The procedure for the bottom panel C is the same, except you will be finishing the hemline by folding over 2 cm, first ironing and then stitching it down along the entire circumference.
Put on the skirt as before and measure from bottom edge of panel B down to the floor + 4 cm. It is best you wear the shoes you would want to wear with the finished skirt. This is your length. For the width add 8 cm to the measurement of panel B. You now have two numbers that make up a rectangle. Cut two pieces from fabric C. Sew as in step two.
*

hemline // Saum

You're almost done :) Next week we'll focus on the embellishments and the belt!
