Easy Cut & Paste Collage Art in my Junk Journal

colorful collage art pages

Hello everyone!

In one of my recent private workshops we made a fun little collage with leftover scraps of paper and simple tools. My motto is always use what you have, recycle and upcycle. I created the left page as a demo and I thought, why not share my technique with my fellow bloggers :)

Below are the steps to create a similar page. I worked in my handmade junk journal, but any journal or even a loose sheet of paper will do.

In the first step I gathered my supplies, which consisted of my basket with paper scraps as well as a box of crayons, my favorite stamps and a couple of paint pens as well as some basic supplies like scissors and a glue stick. I like tearing my papers, but cutting them works fine, too.

adding collage paper

I chose papers with interesting markings, usually gelli prints or painted papers. In the next step I added stamps in random areas and made some marks with a purple crayon to harmonize with the purple already present on the collage. I also swiped some black paint on the page with my finger.

mark making

While I left the page to dry, I prepared my focal image. First I stamped a text stamp on a piece of regular white paper. Then I placed a leaf stencil on top and dabbed black paint all around it. Once dry, I carefully cut around the image, leaving a narrow black edge.

Finally, I adhered the cut out leaf image along with a sentiment to my collaged page.

I hope you enjoyed this beginner-friendly tutorial. You can easily change things up by choosing different collage papers, making a variety of marks, adding more stamps and a different focal image (my workshop participant's pages all looked unique!)

Thanks for visiting!

[Mini Workshop] Memory Booklet ♥

mixed media memory booklet

Hello lovelies,

The secret is out. I have been working on something special behind the scenes...my very own mini workshop! I came up with the concept of this cute memory booklet after spending many evenings brainstorming beginner-friendly ideas that would appeal to anyone who loves mixed media art as well as art journaling, and who cherishes the idea of creating a mini photo album of a meaningful event, be it a trip, a special birthday or holiday!

I truly enjoyed filming and editing this mini workshop from start to finish and since my booklet is filled with photos of one of my favorite city trips to Amsterdam, I often ended up walking down memory lane long after the camera stopped rolling 😀

Piqued your interest? Follow this link for more information.

And a quick reminder that I also offer over 20 absolutely FREE mixed media art tutorials over on my YouTube channel. Click on the button in the sidebar to view.

I'm sharing a few process photos below:

By the way, in my workshop we'll be making the booklet from scratch! Don't worry, it is super simple and only requires two A5 sheets of mixed media paper plus a cover paper. In the workshop I guide you through the binding process, which is also very easy.

The watchtime for this mini workshop is around 30 minutes structured into five manageable video clips. Plus I've also included a bonus video, where I share how to create a color-coordinated stack of collage papers with and without a gel plate. Super fun and easy!

A note about my painting style. If you have been following me on Instagram and elsewhere, you will know that my style is loose and expressive. I lean into this style in my workshop to some degree. Mainly it's about showcasing your favorite photos using collage and paper embellishments with a bit of stamping, stencilling and, of course, journaling.

The beauty of this workshop is that it is customizable to your own style. Feel free to choose your own color palette, collage papers, stickers and embellishments!

KREATIV die messe für kreatives gestalten [Teil 2]

Hi everybody!

*
In my previous post I wrote about my visit to the Craft Fair in Stuttgart. Today I'd like to tell you more about one of the workshops I attended. As mentioned in Part 1, I was handed a set of coupons, each one valid for a specific workshop at the fair. Prior to my trip I knew I wanted to try something new (no point joining a sewing workshop, since working with fabrics is my forte). I decided to try the art of Zentangle®, an easy-to-learn, relaxing art form using repetitive patterns. It helps increase focus, attentiveness, and creativity. Btw, Zentangle® is a method created by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas and is copyrighted.

*

The core concept is to use a "string" which defines an area (this is usually done in pencil) and then that area is filled in with a repetitive pattern chosen from an existing list of patterns, or tangles. The tools required to create your own little masterpiece are black fineliners and ATC white tiles. A tangle is abstract and does not have an "up" or "down". Mostly the drawing is completed in black ink on white paper, however, there is also the option of using watercolor pens to shade and enhance the final artwork. I like the black and white version. Psst...here's a little secret about me...I can't draw, much less focus with a bunch of people looking on ;-) And this workshop was crowded! So instead I listened and observed, all the while forming my own ideas for when I got back home.

*
Here's another little tidbit about me - I'm known to bend the rules, whether I'm sewing, crafting, drawing or cooking! I'm also not a traditionalist. Therefore, I created a Zentangle-inspired piece, a mixed media tangle :) Here's my process: I started out with one of my black and white floral photos, which I posterized and then printed out on archival paper. I pencilled in my "string" to define the white area of the flower. I used  Staedtler pigment liners 0.2 and 0.5 to draw the tangles. The ink is indelible, waterproof on paper and doesn't fade when exposed to light.

*
This is my first try using this technique. "Mistakes" aren't erased (that's why the drawing is done with permanent ink); they are integrated into the overall design. While drawing I noticed I prefer round shapes to geometric ones :) This drawing technique requires focus! Each line should be done deliberately, however, instead of planning each tangle, allow the pattern to reveal itself while drawing. There is no right or wrong. Most of all, have fun!

*
Who else has tried the original Zentangle-method? Do you find it relaxing?
