DIY Magnetic Pin Bowls

Here's something I wanted to try for a long time - painting on porcelain! I think I waited this long because I'm not fond of the "baking" process. Good news - these porcelain pens from Marabu work without baking and according to the manufacturer are dishwasher-safe once completely dry. I wasn't too concerned about this as my bowls are meant for my craft room. The drying process takes three days. The pens are water-based and odourless, so suitable for kids too. The pens come in a variety of colours including primary and classic black.

You'll need // Ihr braucht

small porcelain dishes, plain white // kleine Dipschalen aus Porzellen, weiß
assorted Porcelain Painters // verschiedenfarbige Porzellanmalstifte
extra strong magnets // extra starke Magnete
jewelry glue // Schmuckkleber

 ***
1. First you'll need to thoroughly clean the dishes. Wipe with white spirit to remove any fingerprints.

2. To apply paint shake pen several times. Remove cap and press tip on a piece of cardboard to release paint. Do not press too hard. Decide on a design. Since these bowls are quite small I went for a simple design. Apply evenly. I went a little overboard with the hearts ;-)

3. Important - let dry for three days!

1. Zunächst die Schälchen gründlich sauber machen. Fingerabdrücke mit etwas Spiritus abreiben.

3. Wichtig - drei Tage trocknen lassen!

Once completely dry and set glue an extra strong magnet to the bottom with some jewelry glue. One magnet per bowl is sufficient. The magnet should preferably be 1 cm or larger in diameter. Let dry for another day. Now they are ready to be used for pins, paper clips or even hair pins!

Happy painting!

Home again!

Hi everybody!              Hallo ihr Lieben!

just got back from this beautiful (and famous) city. Did you know that the Christmas Market here dates back to 1434 and is officially the oldest one in Germany?

The nostalgic huts of the Xmas Market offered everything from beeswax candles to traditional sweets and woodcraft from the Erz Mountains region. Although everything was lovely I was particularly drawn to one hut that sold rows and rows of colourful handpainted Matryoshka Dolls. I remember having one of these as a child - no idea what happened to it -  but I still find them absolutely charming! I finally settled on a ruby red one. It's an original one, so it wasn't exactly cheap! My Christmas present to myself :)
The Russian lady that manned the hut gave me some good advice: never twist the dolls to open, simply pull the top straight up and off. This will prevent the wood from splitting!

Normally there are five dolls...            Normalerweise gibt es fünf Puppen...

But mine has two more!              Aber meine hat zwei mehr!

two more tiny ones (left) / zwei Winzlinge (links)
On the right side, you can see the largest and the smallest in juxtaposition. Amazing!
Erstaunlich!
