At the beginning of this year I set out to design a capsule collection of Yoga/active wear. I'm happy to report I've made considerable progress! First, I had to come up with a suitable and catchy name. Many of my readers already know the story behind my first Etsy Shop Peridot by Duni and I wanted my new collection to have a personal connection in the name as well. After a bit of brainstorming Priya by*Duni was born. Priya is an ancient Sanskrit word, loosely translated to mean love, kindness, pleasure. Lovely, isn't it.

Zu Beginn des Jahres hatte ich erwähnt, dass ich an einer kleinen Yoga Kollektion arbeite. Nun freue ich mich berichten zu dürfen, dass ich schon wesentliche Fortschritte gemacht habe! Als erstes musste ich mir für die Kollektion einen passenden Namen ausdenken. Viele meiner Leser kennen ja bereits meinen ersten Etsy Shop Peridot, und ich wollte meiner neuen Kollektion auch eine persönliche Note geben. Ich habe hin und her überlegt und bin dann auf den klangvollen Namen Priya by*Duni gekommen. Priya ist ein altes Sanskrit-Wort. Frei übersetzt bedeutet es Liebe, Güte und Freude. Finde ich schön.
The next hurdle to jump was finding suitable fabrics. Back in March I visited the fabric trade fair and I sourced online as well. I wanted my collection to consist of a few solid colours plus a basic grey colour suitable for mix and matching. Plus the fabric had to be organic cotton with a nice soft touch. Finally I found just what I was looking for and thankfully the wholesale price was in my budget. But there was still a problem - only three of the chosen colours were available for immediate delivery. Since I did not want to waste more time, I had to make do with those. Hopefully the remaining colours will arrive by summertime.

Dann machte ich mich auf die Suche nach geeigneten Stoffen. Bereits im März besuchte ich die Stoffmesse und auch das Internet spielte bei meiner Suche eine Rolle. Meiner Vorstellung enstprechend wollte ich Jerseystoffe aus Biobaumwolle mit einem weichen Griff in verschiedenen Unifarben, die gut untereinander kombinierbar sind. Gar nicht so einfach. Endlich bin ich auf schöne Stoffe gestoßen, die sogar preislich ins Budget passten. Einzigstes Problem - es waren nur drei Farben sofort lieferbar. Damit musste ich mich erstmal zufrieden geben und hoffe, dass die restlichen Farben noch vor dem Sommer kommen.
I then set about making up a few samples according to my hand drawn designs. I so wanted to show the samples on a real person, as they make way more impact. Now comes the exciting news - by happy coincidence the new captain of one of my Etsy teams, the Blogging Business Artisans, is
not only a successful Etsy shop owner with excellent crafty skills but also a beautiful young woman with an amazing physique (she does CrossFit, Zumba, aerial silks and Yoga). Natasha kindly agreed to model my sample outfit, which I made-to-measure just for her, plus she took the wonderful photos as well. Bonus - Natasha resides in Hawaii, so the backdrop is amazing too!

Anhand meiner Eigenentwürfe habe ich dann ein paar Muster genäht. Ich wollte unbedingt, dass eine echte Person (statt Schaufensterpuppe) meine Muster zeigt, denn das hat einfach eine viel größere Wirkung. Jetzt kommt die spannende Neuigkeit - Natasha leitet das BBA Etsy Team, bei welchem ich Mitglied bin. Sie ist eine sehr vielseitige, begabte und erfolgreiche Shopinhaberin, außerdem ist sie bildhübsch und hat eine tolle, sportliche Figur, denn sie macht mit Begeisterung CrossFit, Zumba, Akrobatik mit Seidenbändern und Yoga! Welch ein Glück, dass sie zugestimmt hat ein Outfit, welches ich auf ihre Maße geschneidert habe, Probe zu tragen! Die Fotos stammen auch von ihr, und wer sich nun beim Bilder betrachten fragt wo diese herrliche Landschaft ist: Natasha lebt auf Hawaii!

I thought long and hard about how to differentiate my collection from the many others out there. Apart from that mine is handmade, of course! The best way for me to find out was to visit a local, privately owned Yoga studio and talk to the women there. I signed up for a trial lesson and got to talking with the ladies afterwards. Here's the thing, women come in all shapes and sizes, and since not everyone is as toned as the Yoga instructor, most don't feel comfortable flaunting their bodies wearing skin tight active wear. Also, most prefer solid dark colours and fabrics that are breathable. One of their pet peeves was that store-bought Yoga legging were too low cut and didn't have enough room in the crotch area. Personally, I hate it when I bend over during a workout and have to pull the waistband back up repeatedly.
Im Zuge meiner (Design-)Arbeit habe mich intensiv damit beschäftigt, wie ich dafür sorge, dass sich meine Kollektion von den vielen anderen da draußen abhebt - mal abgesehen davon, dass sie in reiner Handarbeit gefertigt wird! Der beste Weg die Sache anzugehen ist mit interessierten Endverbrauchern zu sprechen. Ich habe mich also für eine Probestunde bei einem kleinen, privaten Yogastudio angemeldet und kam mit mehreren Frauen ins Gespräch. Da die meisten Frauen nicht so durchtrainiert sind wie die Yoga-Lehrerin, fühlen sich in hautenger Yogabekleidung eher unwohl. Außerdem bevorzugen sie lieber dunkle Farben sowie Stoffe die atmungsaktiv sind. Manche meinten, dass die im Laden gekauften Yoga Leggings zu niedrig geschnitten sind und nicht genug "Luft" im Schrittbereich haben. Ich persönlich kann es nicht leiden, wenn ich mich beim Sport z.B. vorn über beuge und den Bund wiederholt nach oben ziehen muß.

Zusätzlich zu der Bekleidung habe ich Special Edition Priya by*Duni Beutel im Angebot. Die gibt es in ca. 41 x 41 cm oder (wie oben) 33 x 33 cm und sind praktisch, um darin Yoga Sachen, Handtuch, Wasserflasche und Müsliriegel zu tranportieren :)
