Khadi® Herbal Hair Dyes

I got my first grey hair at age twenty-two. Apparently, I inherited the early greying from my maternal grandmother. Since then I have sprouted more and more grey. These days I pretty much have grey temples and streaks of grey at the back of my head. Which means I've been colouring my hair on a regular basis, since I don't feel comfortable (yet) sporting grey hair ;-) I've been using a drugstore brand (guilty), because it's easy to apply and I only have to leave it in for about ten minutes. As a small business owner I don't really have the time for prolonged beauty regimens! Lately though I've become concerned with the chemicals I've been subjecting my hair and scalp to. Last time I even noticed a burning sensation while applying it. And even though it is prohibited in the EU, some companies still test their products on animals. Luckily there are alternatives, such as Khadi® Herbal Hair Dyes.

Khadi® offers a good selection of hair colours. My natural hair colour is a very dark brown with chocolate highlights when exposed to a lot of sun, like during my childhood. It got darker when I came to live in Europe, though. Therefore I chose "Dark Brown". Plant based hair dyes are more intense and tend to darken after being exposed to air.

Here are a few tips when colouring with plant based natural hair dye

  • your hair needs be clean of silicones (found in most haircare products). Best to wash you hair with Khadi® herbal shampoo prior to dyeing
  • be sure to wear a plastic cloak or old clothes / towel around your shoulders, as it can get quite messy! The package thoughtfully includes disposable gloves - wear them
  • mixing the paste, applying it and leaving it in takes time, so plan to do this on your day off. Don't forget to read instructions carefully
  • it helps to have a helping hand for those hard to see areas at the back of the head
  • do make use of the shower cap included in the package, as it's important to keep paste warm. In addition wrap a towel around it
*

The darker your natural hair, the darker the dye will colour it, which means my ends turned out pretty dark. This means the next time around I won't need to dye the entire length, simply the top part of my hair. In the long run I'll be saving costs as I can probably use one package for three applications. The first time around I thought it best to apply the paste on my entire hair. Speaking of the paste - I mixed the entire package (100 gr powder) with black tea cooled down to 122°F. Why black tea? Well, the darkbown dye contains a lot of indigo. The black tea neutralizes the blue preventing my grey hair from having a blueish tinge later on...and it worked! Also, the paste smells like spinach. It really does. But that's better than any chemical smell, right? Depending on the length and thickness of your hair, you will have to leave the paste on for a minimum of thirty minutes up to two hours. My hair is medium thick and quite dry, so to be on the safe side I left it in for about an hour. I'm positively surprised by the results. Apart from the spot I missed at the back, the herbal dye covered all of the grey, even the silver at my temples! The colouring in those areas is not as dark as the ends, but as I explained above that's easily solved next time. Important: avoid shampooing hair or using styling products for at least 24 hours after dyeing, so that the colour can properly develop and set. As I mentioned it will continue to develop and darken when exposed to air up to 48 hours. I can attest to that.

The above photo shows my hair in sunlight. Also, I missed a grey hair. See? That's why it's a good idea to ask a friend to help the next time!

What I like about this product:
affordable
pure natural ingredients
does not contain preservatives, colour intensifiers or chemical additives
powders can be mixed to acquire unique hues
long lasting colour, volume and gloss
certified natural cosmetic product
fairtrade
not tested on animals

Was mir an diesem Produkt gefällt:
bezahlbar
rein pflanzlich
streng kontrollierte Naturkosmetik
keine Konservierungsmittel, Farbkraftverstärker oder sonstige chemische Zusätze
Farben können untereinander vermischt werden
dauerhafte Tönung, Volumen und Glanz
fairer Handel
keinerlei Tierversuche

Conclusion - although time consuming and messy I have decided to use this product exclusively in the future. I will just have to make time for it. The natural looking result plus the added bonus of no itchy or burning scalp is well worth it! Should you have any questions concering the dyeing process please don't hesitate to email me :)

    Liebe Grüße

  2. I also struggle with grey hair and i've been doing so since kind of the same age as you. I chose to go to hairdressers from the very beginning, but a while ago i wanted to give it a try myself. And it was a disaster!! :))) I searched like crazy for an open hair salon late on a Sunday evening until i finally found one that took care of my messed up hair. I promised myself i wouldn't try such dangerous things again on my own head. :))

  3. Hallo liebe Duni,

  4. My maternal grandma had very little gray hair and my mom doesn't have gray hair yet either. My dad on the other hand started going from black hair to white fairly young so guess which side I inherited. *sigh* So far I just have to touch up my temples and part but it's only a matter of time. I have it professional done at $170 a pop about 3 times a year.

  6. I too use the drug store brand to dye my hair. I don't have the time and can't bring myself to spend the money on a salon dye.
I like that there are natural alternatives out there. The chemical smell is pretty strong on the brand I use, so you know it can't be good!

  7. Hi Duni, I will need to look for this product! Like you I started greying at a young age. My brother who is only 3 years older than me is 100% grey and I probably would be too if I didn't color it regularly. I use products that are not tested on animals but of course they are filled with chemicals! I do look forward to the day when I can go naturally grey and not feel like it ages me! My mom slowly went blonde in her 60s to conceal the grey. Now she is a blonde and does not have to color very often. Thank you for sharing!

  8. I've colored my hair a few times with the cheap drugstore dye. I'm pretty lazy though and hate doing it. I finally decided I'm not bothered by the gray. My hair is pretty light though so for the longest time everyone was calling me a blonde and I didn't correct them....lol

  9. Burning scalp! Ieee! Your colored hair looks beautiful in the sunlight, so I'd say the natural dye works well, even if it is kind of a bother. =)
