A - Z of essential oils { Intro }

Hi lovelies!        Hallo, ihr Lieben!

This is the first of a new regular series here on Duni's Studio. In each post I will feature an essential oil (starting alphabetically), describe its properties, include helpful information about proper use within the scope of holistic aromatherapy and include a little recipe. As there are hundreds of essential oils available these days I will focus on the most common ones which have a variety of uses for both home and health.

As I mentioned, my mother was an aromatherapist who trained with renowned Valerie Ann Worwood, considered the world's foremost authority on aromatherapy and essential oils. Unlike most  young adults at the time I took a keen interest in the world of essential oils and the diverse benefits of a holistic approach. Many a time when either my brother or I were afflicted with a common cold my Mom would make up a bottle of various oils to help alleviate the symptoms. I'll be sharing a specific recipe in a future post! Here's where I point out that, while beneficial, essential oils do not substitute the diagnosis or treatment of a qualified medical practitioner.  Please keep this in mind for this and future posts.

Aromatherapy has become a catchphrase these days, but there is a huge difference between pure (100%) essential oils and the scented candles that you can buy in drugstores!
Please note that all (future) recipes for therapeutic, medicinal or beauty purposes exclusively  require pure organic essential oils. What are pure essential oils exactly?  Basically they are liquid substances in concentrated form extracted from certain species of flowers, grasses, fruits, leaves, roots and trees. Each single oil is used for diverse purposes, but it is the combination or blending of specific oils that create a synergistic effect and increased potency. Pure essential oils should never be applied directly on skin or ingested. In aromatherapy it is usual to dispense a few drops in a base oil. Common base oils are sweet almond, jojoba, wheatgerm, evening primrose oil and should be cold-pressed.

Was sind reine ätherische Öle?

Common uses for essential oils

There are many ways in which essential oils can be used - here are the most common ways:
massage oil, vaporized, in baths, sauna, diffused, skin care and even cooking! While I can't find the essentials oil brand that my Mom carried in her shop all those years ago, I really love working with Bergland as they are certified organic and have a wide range to choose from. For my US and UK readers I recommend NHR organic oils.
If you are interested to learn more about essential oils and their various uses stay tuned for my next post featuring Anis (Illicium verum). Thanks for reading along, until then!

  5. Great series Duni! I look forward to reading about the oils and seeing which ones I would benefit from. Organic would be important to me too. I love the aromatherapist's name since I am also Valerie Anne (with an e at the end). :)

  7. Great post! You know I'm looking forward to reading more. =) I know Aniseed is very beneficial, but I really don't like the way it smells or tastes! Too bad, really, because it would probably be quite helpful for me.

  9. I love this, how wonderful that you were raised with a trained aromatherapist! My mom and I recently finished medical aromatherapy certifications and I'm going to keep going deep down the rabbit hole to learn everything about them. They are amazing healing modalities. (And yes, NOT at ALL the stuff fragrance oil candles proclaim to be-- real essentials oils in candles would be burned off by the flash point anyways.) Excited to keep reading your series and recommendations!

  12. I love this new series! Since we turned to all natural and organic in the past few years, essential oils have always been an area to explore, though I have been collecting info about them I never actually started using them and then with pregnancy plans and now being pregnant I decided to put them on hold for now, considering the research is limited regarding their use at this time. But will note all your info and pin for later, looking forward to it :)

I'm sure this will be a great series!
