From idea to { handmade } item

These days consumers are so used to seeing rows upon rows of factory-made clothing that most are unaware of how much work goes into creating a handmade item. There are tons of things to consider before the sketch on paper turns into a physical item. Not to mention all the time, money and resources invested into every new creation. All this goes unseen by most consumers. So I was rather pleased when Etsy introduced a new video function in the "about" section of my shop. While I haven't got one uploaded yet, I will definitely make use of this function (weather permitting) hopefully in the near future :)

Heutzutage gibt es massenhaft industriell gefertigte Bekleidung. Dies erweckt bei manchen Verbrauchern den Eindruck, dass meine handgefertigten Teile  schnell von der Nähmaschine hüpfen. Jedoch bevor sich die Skizze zu einem tragbaren Bekleidungsstück gestaltet gibt es vieles zu erwägen. In jede neue Kreation steckt viel Zeit und Geld und bringt manchmal ganz neue Herausforderungen mit sich. Deshalb begrüße ich die von Etsy eingeführte neue Video-Funktion im Shop Profil. So kann ich allen potentiellen Kunden einen Einblick hinter die Kulissen gewähren und gleichzeitig Aufklärungsarbeit leisten. Noch habe ich kein Video gedreht, aber wenn es das Wetter erlaubt werde ich das schnellstens nachholen!

This time next week I will be in Cologne visiting the annual international trade fair for handicraft and textiles. My appointment book is full! I'm pretty excited to check out new knit fabric collections for my Priya active wear line - you might remember due to unforeseen circumstances  I was forced to put this collection on hold. In the meantime I have quietly gathered even more information and researched the market in depth. I want to go there fully prepared. My main concern is availability of fabrics. These days more often than not manufacturers simply roll out new collections, but do not offer continuous reordering. Therefore, I'm looking for timeless colors and classic patterns that I can work with for at least three seasons.

Um diese Zeit nächste Woche bin ich wieder in Köln auf der H&H, der jährlichen, internationalen Fachmesse für Kunsthandwerk und Textiles. Mein Terminkalender ist schon voll! Ich bin gespannt auf die neuen Jerseys, speziell für meine Priya Yoga Kollektion. Vielleicht erinnert Ihr Euch - aufgrund unvorhergesehener Umstände war ich gezwungen diese auf Eis zu legen. In der Zwischenzeit habe ich weiterhin den Markt recherchiert. Mein Hauptanliegen ist die Verfügbarkeit der Stoffe. Neuerdings produzieren die Hersteller nämlich laufend neue Kollektionen jedoch ohne Möglichkeit zur Nachbestellung. Aus diesem Grund interessieren mich vornehmlich zeitlose Farben und klassische Muster. 

An dem 1. Bloggertreffen von der Initiative Handarbeit kann ich leider aus Termingründen nicht teilnehmen. Schade. Vielleicht nächstes Jahr.

 

I am experimenting with a looser fit workout top. No frills, just quality fabric, strong seams and sewn with care and love :) The whole process from sketch to finished item took around four hours. I try my best to offer reasonable prices, but I'll tell you upfront that my handmade items cost more than clothing off the rack. Would you be willing to pay more for handmade items? Side note: I received a lovely message from a customer who bought one of my items four years ago. In it she wrote that even after several washes her item still looks like new. Lovely, isn't it? And it perfectly emphasizes that you get what you pay for :)

Das obige Shirt ist ein Prototyp für ein leger sitzendes Top. Ohne Schnickschnack, aus hochwertigem Jersey, und mit Sorgfalt und Liebe gefertigt :) Von der Skizze bis zum fertigen Artikel dauerte es etwa vier Stunden. Und ich sage es auch gleich vorweg -  meine handgenähten Teile liegen preislich über dem Durchschnitt, sind aber vom Garn bis zum Stoff Qualitätsware. Randbemerkung: neulich erhielt ich eine nette Nachricht von einer Kundin, die vor vier Jahren einen meiner Artikel gekauft hatte. Darin schrieb sie, dass auch nach mehreren Wäschen der Artikel aussieht wie neu.  Na, das höre ich doch gern :)

{DIY} Pompom Scarf

Still looking for a gift for your friend, sister, colleague? Here's a cute last minute handmade gift idea that it easy to sew and customizable!

For this project all you need is a length of jersey (knit fabric) in colour of your choice and some leftover wool yarn. Check illustrations below for basic instructions. Use a ball-point needle on your sewing machine.

Auf der Suche nach einer schnellen Handmade Geschenkidee für die Freundin, Schwester oder Kollegin? Dieser Pompom Schal aus Jersey ist originell und schnell genäht!
Dazu benötigt Ihr ein langes Stück Jersey, dicke Wolle für die Pompoms sowie eine Maschinennadel speziell für Jerseystoffe.

(1 + 2) Start by making two pompoms. Follow this method. Use the large cardboard template.

(1 + 2) Zunächst zwei Pompoms machen. Hier die Anleitung. Die größere Variante (7 cm) wählen.

( 3 ) Fold fabric in half as shown in illustration. Mark the center and cut off corners diagonally at each end (the angle determines how pointy the scarf will look - mine is 45°). Pin the raw edges from one X to the other X right sides together - leave a 4" gap at one long side. Remember to place the pompoms inside and as close as they go to the pointy tips. Leave long thread dangling for the time being. Carefully and slowly sew a seam (0.4"). When you reach the pointy tip, push pompom to other side, pivot and continue to sew.

( 3 ) Jersey wie in der Zeichnung längs falten, rechte Seite innen. Von der Mitte aus an beiden Enden die Ecken diagonal abschneiden (der Winkel richtet sich je nachdem wie spitz zulaufend der fertige Schal sein soll - bei mir 45°). Die offene Kante von X zu X mit Nadeln feststecken, dabei eine 10 cm Öffnung an der langen Kante offen lassen. Pompoms zwischen die Stofflagen schieben und so nah wie möglich an die jeweilige Spitze. Vorsichtig und langsam im Geradstich nähen (1 cm Saum). Sobald Ihr die Spitze erreicht habt, dem Pompom vorsichtig zur anderen Seite schieben, Schal drehen und weiternähen.

( 4 ) Snip off wool yarn. Turn right side out through gap. If necessary, iron lightly. Close gap by hand with a slip stitch.

( 4 ) Überstehenden Wollfaden abschneiden. Vorsichtig durch die Öffnung auf Rechts drehen. Leicht überbügeln falls nötig. Öffnung mit ein paar Handstichen schließen.

Many of my customers prefer sewing smaller projects, therefore requiring less amount of fabric, but a larger variety. I will be accomodating this by adjusting the minimum purchasing amount to 0,25 m for all patchwork fabrics. Of course, it will take a while for me to make the changes, but the gorgeous LULU ROSE collection is already available from 0,25 m. Should you see a patchwork fabric that has not been changed yet, don't hesitate to leave a message in the "message to seller box" during checkout. I'll happily adjust the quantity for you manually!

Die beliebten Art Gallery Fabrics Jerseystoffe gehen rucki-zucki weg! Insbesondere diese zwei Schönen. Davon habe ich nur noch ganz wenig Vorrat und habe sie schon nachbestellt. Bitte beachtet, dass die Lieferung bis zu 6 Wochen dauern kann. Von dem traumhaft schönen Pusteblumenstoff  in aktuellem Navy habe ich mir eine taillierte Tunika mit extralangen Ärmeln genäht. Die Qualität ist hervorragend! Das Teil mochte ich gar nicht ausziehen so bequem ist es! Außerdem habe ich mir noch ein Oversized Shirt mit Raglanärmel aus dem wunderbaren Jersey mit Hirsch Druck genäht. I made a comfy but formfitting tunic with extra-long sleeves from this gorgeous dandelion print jersey in trending navy. The byline of AGF's logo really is justified, as the quality of the knits is superb! I did not want to take the tunic off, it's that comfortable :) I also made an oversized longsleeve Tee featuring a fun stag print on a warm grey. I'm a huge fan of the AGF knit range and can't wait to see what the AGF designers come up with next!

DIY Tassel Scarf

As a DIY blogger specialising in handmade fashion I need to think ahead to next season...trust me, fall will be here faster than you can say tassel! The other day I saw a cute scarf online and thought to myself: I could make that! This scarf is made from a lovely soft knit (95% CO / 5% Spandex) in a solid colour. If you've never sewn with knits before, this is the perfect starter project!

Als DIY Blogger, auf Handmade Fashion spezialisiert, schaue ich bereits jetzt nach Trends in der kommenden Saison, so z.B. Fransen und Quasten. Neulich entdeckte ich beim virtuellen Shoppen einen süßen Schal und es kam der Gedanke: Den mache ich mir selbst! Zumal ich das Material schon vorhanden hatte. Der Stoff ist ein weicher, unifarbener Jersey mit 95% Baumwollanteil. Falls Ihr noch nie mit Jerseys genäht habt, so ist dies das perfekte Einsteigerprojekt!

You'll need // Ihr benötigt

knit fabric, solid colour // Jersey, uni

rick rack trim, various colours 1 m each // Zackenlitze, verschiedene Farben je 1 m

coordinating thread // farblich passendes Nähgarn

10 small tassels, various colours // 10 kleine Quasten, verschiedene Farben

ball point needle for sewing machines // Jersey Nadel für die Nähmaschine

basic sewing kit // Basic Näh-Utensilien 

Step 1

Cut two pieces of fabric 32 cm x 160 cm (approx. 12.5" x 63"). See illustration above. Sometimes, with solid coloured knits, especially dark colours it's difficult to determine which side is the right side. In this case simply check which way the selvedges roll, namely toward the wrong side. 

Schritt 1

Vom Jersey zwei Streifen je 32 cm x 160 cm schneiden. Siehe obige Abbildung. Bei dunklen Unis ist es manchmal schwer zu erkennen welches die rechte Seite ist. Am einfachsten ist es zu schauen in welche Richtung sich die Webkanten (nämlich zur linken) einrollen. 

Step 2

Take one piece and place it right side up. Measure 5 cm (approx. 2") up from short end. This is the placement of the first rick rack. Cut rick rack to fit across the width and straight stitch using coordinating thread. Space the other colours 1,5 cm (approx. 0.6") apart and stitch on. Repeat for the other short end. See illustration above.

Schritt 2

Nehmt nun ein Teil, rechte Seite oben. Passende Stücke Zackenlitze schneiden. Plaziert die erste Zackenlitze 5 cm von der Kante der kurzen Seite entfernt. Mit farblich passendem Garn im Geradstich steppen. Die zwei weiteren Litzen mit jeweils 1,5 cm Abstand annähen. Genauso bei dem anderen Ende vorgehen. Siehe Abbildung oben.

Step 3

Now lay the remaining piece exactly on top of the first piece, right sides facing. Pin all around leaving a 10 cm (approx. 4") gap on one long side. Straight stitch all around (seam width 0.4") starting and ending from gap. Don't forget to backstitch! Turn scarf carefully through opening and gently push out corners. Close the gap by hand. Press.

And finally, sew on by hand five tassels at each end, spacing them 7 cm (approx. 2.75") apart.

Schritt 3

Nun das zweite Teil exakt auf das erste Teil legen, rechte Seite innen. Rundherum mit Stecknadeln fixieren, dabei eine 10 cm Öffnung an einer langen Seite zum Wenden offen lassen. An der Öffnung beginnend ringsherum steppen (Nahtzugabe 1 cm). Rückstiche nicht vergessen! Schal vorsichtig durch die Öffnung wenden. Offene Naht mit Handstichen schließen. Schal bügeln. 

Zum Schluß mit ein paar Handstichen jeweils fünf Quasten an den kurzen Seiten immer mit 7 cm Abstand annähen.
