A little bit of this and that

[Werbung/Advertisement]

Hello friends!

oops, I did it again - that is, not blog for weeks on end. At this point I'm probably writing into the void, bar for the handful of exceptionally loyal readers who have stuck with me throughout the years. Know that I appreciate you so much 💕

So while my poor blog has been collecting dust, I have been busy dealing once again with new rules and regulations affecting my small business. In fact, in the past 3 - 4 years it seems like the powers that be have been targeting small businesses - especially online businesses. I finally had to loop in my tax consultant, because the whole process is quite complicated. As the new regulation goes into effect next month I've sadly had to "lower my sights" businesswise. It's kind of depressing actually, but I'm not throwing in the towel just yet. I love my shop, my products and of course my fabulous customers!

In a nutshell, this basically means that I will be shipping my goods primarily to the following countries:

GERMANY, USA, CANADA, AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND, JAPAN, NORWAY, SWITZERLAND, SINGAPORE, MALAYSIA

I may be able to ship my goods to:

ENGLAND (with reservations), LATIN AND SOUTH AMERICA, SELECT ASIAN COUNTRIES

I may be able to ship my goods to:

AUSTRIA, if you use one of those companies that provide delivery addresses in Germany close to the border and are able  to pick up the goods from there.

Finally, I won't be able to ship my goods to: EU countries outside Germany

The latter must seem especially confusing and not wanting to get into the nitty-gritty, trust that I have gone through all options available to me 😔

If your country isn't listed - contact me at my email and I will check if I can ship to you!

All of this comes at an unfortunate time, because my own website plus Etsy have propelled forward in the last pandemic year and I was actually hoping for a repeat this year. Now with having to cut important shipping destinations I will really need to up my game locally.
As if that wasn't enough to deal with I will also have to primarily source my goods locally too. Thankfully, I have been carrying popular acufactum fabrics for a while now and they are based right here in Germany. Below are some new fabrics that I have received recently. They are certified oekotex® cotton fabrics at 58" wide.

Except for the fox one, all are available both at my website and at Etsy.

In other news...

This past Monday I received my second vaccination. So far I only have a sore arm and felt a bit tired the next day. I am so relieved. I have decided to keep wearing my mask while grocery shopping, though, out of courtesy for those that haven't had a shot yet. It is slow going in Germany, as there aren't enough vaccines available. sigh.

My beloved sewing machine of 12 years broke down a few weeks ago. Ugh.  I'm still deciding whether to get a new one or bring it to the repair shop, which is actually a bike repair shop, but the guy does sewing machines on the side. I will have to make a decision soon, as it is really weird not being able to sew!
Plus I'm still suffering slightly from "creative block". I'm putting it down to being cooped up at home for 14 months. I miss those garden days . I always found inspiration there. Speaking of garden, we have started picking up where we left off in our garden again, however it's a bigger project than we initially thought! So, no pictures as of yet.

While browsing the internet I came upon this art site and suddenly I felt the urge to paint again. I haven't held a paint brush in probably over ten years...
Anyway one art site led to another and another and basically I'm now passionate about mixed media art. I know I'm very late to the game, but I am just happy it sparked my creativity again, even though it's completely different to sewing 🌈
I have been circling Dina Wakley's Mixed Media Art Journal for a while and finally bought it. I was intrigued by the various painting surfaces - watercolor, canvas, burlap and kraft paper - inside and wanted to try out some new techniques. I bought some basic art supplies (that was fun!) and also unearthed the swag bag I once received while attending the KreativMesse. I hadn't even opened some of those crafty things and now they will be put to good use!

Hopefully I can show you some stuff I've done with it in the near future. I know the burlap is tricky. We'll see what I come up with.
Thank you for reading along. I hope you are all doing well. I know these past months have been so tough for many of us. Take care! Love ~

Spring Summer Fabrics, Tilda & Life lately

[Werbung/Anzeige/Advertisement]

Tilda fabrics / Tilda Stoffe

Hello everyone,

high time I dusted off this little blog of mine! First and foremost I truly hope that you and your families are well and safe. This is a challenging time for all of us and I acknowledge that it is more so for some than others. Please don't despair and please let's be kind to each other.

Back in January my friends in Hong Kong alerted me to the fact that there was a deadly virus coming out of mainland China and that the original whistleblower had been detained and information suppressed. (no surprise there). So I told my close friends and a few family members - but I don't think I was taken very seriously. Regardless, I kept monitoring the situation closely and noticed that more and more cases were being reported from around the world. At some point in February I decided to order surgical face masks. They never arrived. I was able to secure a few from the local pharmacy, but they told me there was a severe shortage everywhere. By March, with the devastating news of virus-related deaths coming out of Italy and the new "hotspot" in Austria...well, by this time no one, at least in Europe, doubted that this was a pandemic. By the end of March Germany finally issued a stay-at-home order (way too late in my opinion) and obviously all big events, including the annual tradefair that I had been attending for the last 10 years, were cancelled. Followed by school and shop closures. I think April is the month when the rest of the world finally woke up that this was deadly serious and afforded a global effort to combat.

This moment in time is a test for humanity. Will we become more nationalistic? Will there be class warfare? I think it's up to each of us to maintain a standard of decency within our communities. It's also wise not to put too much faith in our respective governments. As seen in the last couple of weeks some of our so called leaders are not invested in the welfare of the citizens. Best to rely on your own common sense. I live in the state with the second highest infection cases and rising. Our MP insists on opening up the schools/shops/public spaces right now. Our MP doesn't know how to wear a face mask. He wants to become the next chancellor?! Well, not with my vote, that's for sure.

While things look dire economically, perhaps it's time to re-evaluate consumerism. Perhaps focus on quality rather than quantity? How about raising wages for essential workers? When all this is over (fair warning = it's going to take longer than you think) we, as a whole, must understand that our previous way of life is no longer sustainable. There are a lot of good people out there who have been trying to implement changes for the better, but it's a slow process. Plus it's the politicians/governments that make the big decisions - that ultimately affect us all. If you are lucky to live in a country that (still) allows voting - don't waste this privilege please.

Shop News

As I already mentioned in my newsletter as well as in my Etsy shop, unfortunately due to the pandemic shipping to USA, Australia and some areas of Europe has been temporarily suspended. This is because the postal service is not working at full capacity at the moment. I am checking daily to see when it's going to open up again. Fingers crossed it will be soon.

We can all use a bit of cheering up! Cute unicorn stationery available in my online shop.

Stationery

Since most of us can't get ahold of face masks a lot of people (myself included) have been sewing them. Some of us have been sewing batches of fabric face masks for hospital staff, children's cancer units, care facilities etc. What an amazing joint effort. Check out Pinterest for plenty of free patterns. There are several types of fabric masks: simple rectangular ones with loops for attaching to your ears, the curved ones with either fabric ties that go around the head or elastic loops.
Good news for all those who want to sew up a batch of face masks, but don't have time to trace the pattern. Sometime in the next two weeks I will be getting in fabric panels with the masks already printed on them! The kit includes the elastic. The masks are double layer and feature funky prints including a rainbow one and a solid color lining. Simply cut and sew. Yay!

coming soon!

I've also received some new whimsical fabrics by Daniela Drescher for acufactum. They are based on her children's books and feature all sorts of sweet details.

And here are some more new arrivals. Pretty pastels in pink, robin's egg blue and natural.

Rue 1800

And lastly, some items I made in the last month or so...

Oh, and one last thing. I think we should refer to social distancing as physical distancing. Describes it much better, don't you think? Thank you for reading along and wherever you may be in the world please take care, stay home and stay safe.

Hello again!

[Werbung/Anzeige/Advertisement]

Amberley by Brenda Riddle
We're four months into 2019, so I guess it's a bit late to wish my dear readers a happy new year, assuming you are still reading my blog! I have an excuse for neglecting my blog all these months. Early January I had a major set back healthwise and ended up in hospital, not once but twice. I'm still not feeling all that great, so blogging is really the last thing on my mind right now. I apologize.

Also, ever since the implementation of all these new rules and regulations effectively censoring online activity, it's become a lot less fun to blog. I remember back in 2008 (!) blogging was a mix of creative writing, journaling, sharing and exchanging information, the occasional promotion and link building. It was casual, easy, and fun! These days I have to weigh each word carefully and linking is a tricky business. Frankly, it's not worth the risk being fined. There are people out there being paid to scan (German) blogs for even the tiniest of "mistakes". And the fines are hefty. It sucks.
I have been a little more active on Instagram. But even on there I have to be careful what to post and how I formulate the description.

This year I didn't get around to sewing much, even though my fingers are itching to complete a couple of projects. I do still have a few of my foldable shopping bags available at Etsy. Heads up - international shipping has gone up this year, so it pays to buy more as it's a fixed price up to 1 kg.

In between hospital stays and work commitments I have collaborated with my illustrator friend Siobhan on a wonderful design project for my main shop. Check out this gorgeous collection of postcards with vintage/shabby chic illustrations. There are 10 happy designs to choose from. Printed in UK on high quality, matte finish card. New in are also lovely "Thank You" and "Birthday" greeting cards with envelopes included. Below are some of my favorites.

Last weekend I managed to visit the trade fair in Cologne after all. This fair is important in my line of work, and although it was quite exhausting I was glad I got to meet up with some colleagues and preview the latest fabric collections. Here's a sneak peek of Tanya Whelan's latest "Janey" due to arrive in May. So pretty!

Easter is only two weeks away, can you believe? I'm hoping for some milder weather. It's been quite chilly and rainy these past few weeks. I generally feel better physically and emotionally in warmer weather. A bit of sunshine can do wonders.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend, take care and enjoy every moment. Love,

Gazebo collection

Hello everyone!
I just realized another month has passed without an update on my blog. I guess this is my new posting rhythm, and frankly I feel more comfortable posting something worth showing, even if it is far and few between.
Back in January I mentioned I had a set back regarding my health. Since then I've had a bunch of doctor's appointments and been poked and prodded multiple times. They've put me on different meds (the side effects are horrendous) which I absolutely must take for at least three months for them to take effect. After a whole year of pain it is quite a challenge to keep the faith and I suffered a spot of depression back in February. Also, the cold and gloom didn't help.  But now, finally, spring has arrived and with those first warm rays of sunshine my spirits have lifted again. I'm ready to fight this!

Meanwhile, all the fabrics from Tanya Whelan's newest collection Gazebo (see pic at top) have arrived, except one (blue dots), which I will receive next week. These designer fabrics are superior quality and the designs in this collection are both elegant and nostalgic. I love the combination of navy, pink, mint and soft grey so much that I'll be making a full-size quilt from these :)

Hearts are such a classic motif. New in from the Sophie porcelain range are these pretty and useful bowls with all over heart pattern and handpainted pink rim. More items in this range include paper napkins, tea towels, mugs and jugs. Also, I love the stylish packaging (see egg cups).
💗

There's also some fun new stationery from Krima & Isa plus new button badges matching the Fairy Dawn range from April Rose England. I made some backpacks, sewed a little polar bear in a jumper (I named him Nils) and a patchwork spring bag.
🌺

Lastly, First Romance, a sweet fabric collection by Canadian designer Kristyne Czepuryk arrived last month. These are selling like hot cakes and the white fabric with small roses is almost sold out.
🌸

Thank you for stopping by and reading along. Take care...till next month!

Friday, September 22

Hello friends.

This is possibly the longest I've gone without blogging since starting in 2008. I wish I had good news to share, but the fact is these past weeks have been rough. Where do I start?! First, the meds I had been taking to treat my condition seemed to make it worse. I felt like I was becoming weaker day by day, hence no energy to blog. Finally, one morning when the pain was really bad I decided - enough. I made an appointment to ask my doctor to take me off the meds. He certainly wasn't happy, but I didn't care. The thing is with this type of medication I can't just simply stop taking them. They need to be reduced slowly, so as not to have an adverse effect on the heart. I did actually have some complications which made all the more exhausting. While all of this was going on I  handled my business as best I could (sometimes I really wish I had a helper). Also, it seems my shop on Etsy has finally run its course with little to no views, and since I am selling my handmade items on my own website and Instagram I will probably close my Etsy shop by the end of this month. For anyone interested - all of my handmade items will be available through Duni's Studio online shop and I will be uploading more items bit by bit. Unfortunately, I'm not the only one who's been ill. My husband developed pneumonia and had to be hospitalized. He's home now but on bed rest until fully recovered. And then there's Sammy. A few months back I had discovered a small lump on his hip. A biopsy was done and the vet said it was benign. After a couple of weeks I noticed it had grown! So I took Sammy to another vet who told me the lump needed to be operated. Turns out it was malignant. I was devastated by this news and am heartbroken as I write this. While the operation went well, the healing of the wound took ages. The scar is about four inches long and Sammy kept ripping off the dressing, which I had to change several times. It was a stressful week. The awful reality is that the tumor may have spread already. We discussed the option of having a CT scan done, but then decided against it. Knowing doesn't make it any easier or better. Besides, now that the pain from the wound has subsided Sammy seems his normal happy self. We'll monitor him closely and if he shows any signs of pain or acts weird it's back to the vet. I'm praying hard for many more months of cuddle time with Sammy. Meanwhile I have been seeing a great naturopath who has prescribed a combination of natural remedies and also gave me some clarity about how past trauma can manifest in physical illness. He also recommended lifestyle changes which we will be discussing at my next appointment. Incredibly, after a week of following this prescription the pain in my body has lessened! Otherwise I wouldn't be sitting here typing this, trust me. I'm not out of the woods yet, but this gives me hope you guys. After months of pain I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. I know this wasn't the kind of post you expected, so thank you for reading along. But that's what life is all about. There's ups and downs, good times and bad. Just keeping it real!

Life Lately (sad)

First of all, thank you, dear blog friends, for expressing your concern in your messages and emails. I truly appreciate it!! I'm fine, if somewhat emotionally and physically exhausted. My mother, who has been seriously ill for a long time was transferred to the palliative care unit two weeks ago. When I heard she'd been moved I hopped on the earliest flight I could find. She's in severe pain and it is distressing to witness. It is frustrating to sit beside her and feel so helpless! I was there a whole week and besides having to go through all sorts of scary paperwork I also took care of my mom's cat who I will be picking up next week and bringing her back to my place. Also a scary thing, as she is an indoor cat and will have to share our home with Sammy, resident cat. Time will tell how that will turn out. Of course my mom misses her terribly and it saddens me that she won't be able to see her one last time, as she will not be returning back to her home. I'm grateful, though, to all her friends and kind neighbours who have been so supportive these past few weeks. The building complex my mother lived in for over a decade has a communal garden and a few of the long-time residents have planted and tended to a variety of pretty flowers for the benefit of all. They are in full bloom now, so I snapped some photos with my phone, to show to my mother in the care unit, as I knew she would love seeing them. I also thought it might distract her from the constant pain. You might like to look at the flowers in the slide show below too! I'm not sure what comes next, but currently I simply don't have the energy to keep up with blogs and social media. What little energy I have left I need to focus on my business. I do hope you understand. The easiest way to stay in touch with me is via instagram - if you wish. I do hope things return back to "normal" very soon.
*

Thank you for reading along, take care
xoxo

Life Lately

The year is rapidly coming to a close. Where did the last twelve months go? Honestly, I feel that (for me, at least) this past year has been one endless rollercoaster ride, so I'm really hoping for a more balanced 2015! Meanwhile, here's what's been happening behind the scenes (mostly mobile phone pictures):
*

A lovely selection of Xmas cards from dear friends and sweet bloggers! // Winter moon shortly before dawn // sparkly garnet earrings I made for myself and will wear on Christmas Eve // ubiquitious shopping mall Christmas tree & decorations // sparkly earstuds I made as gifts // all in a day's work // baking some cookies (recipe to follow) // pretty tree with purple ornaments in a local shop // sewing hearts (a lot) // Leo, about a week after visiting the vet, still holding up his little front paw - he can walk properly again now, thank goodness! // cheerful Christmas tree in local flower shop
And how was your week? :)
*

Happy Friday!
