DIY coin purse with bobble frame

If you've ever wondered how to make a sew-in coin purse with a whimsical bobble frame (they come in many colours) well, I'll guide you through it step by step. There's a bit of handsewing involved, but it's still quickly made and even beginners can try this! Go ahead, it's fun!

You'll need // Material

approx. 3.5" wide bobble frame, rounded // Metallbügel ca. 8 cm breit, gebogen
fabric scraps // Stoffreste
small piece lightweight interfacing // ein Stück dünnes Bügelvlies
embroidery thread & needle // Stickgarn & Nadel mit großem Öhr
basic sewing kit // Nähutensilien

Step One // Schritt Eins

On a piece of paper lay your frame and draw along the outside edge, widening the line slightly at the hinges. Make a mark where the hinges are located. Continue by drawing an egg-shaped oval with a slightly flattened bottom. This is your pattern (#1). You will need to cut 2 each of main fabric, lining and interfacing.
*

Step Two // Schritt Zwei

Interface the main fabric pieces. With right sides facing, sew along the bottom edge from hinge mark to hinge mark. Clip the rounded corners (see photo above). Do the same with the lining pieces, however, leave a small gap for turning at the bottom (#3).With right sides facing slip the main piece into the lining piece matching side seams and stitch the top edge all around (#4).
*
Rundherum obere Kante schmal absteppen (#4).

Step Three // Schritt Drei

Carefully turn the purse right side out through the small opening. Close the hole by hand with a few stitches. Tuck the lining inside the purse and iron. It should look like mine in the above photo.
*

Step Four // Schritt Vier

Now it's time to attach the frame to the pouch! Cut a length of embroidery thread the colour of your choice.  Thread a needle with an eye large enough to pull the thread through, but small enough to pass through the holes in the frame. Make a knot at the end and starting at one hinge end push through the fabric at an angle just below the inside lip of the frame and up through the first hole. Carefully pull the thread through and continue down through the second hole and up again; down through the third hole and up again etc. Be sure not to miss a hole! Continue until you reach the end of one side and secure with a knot on the inside. Do the same with the other half of the frame.
*

And you're done! Now you have a sweet little coin purse with bobble frame. Finished size approximately 3.2 x 5 inches. As always, if you have any questions about this tutorial just drop me a line. My email is in the top right on this blog.
*
Fertig! Email steht oben recht.

Happy Sewing!

I do...

In honour of the wedding season I have designed and made this wedding/special occasion purse made from buttersoft repurposed genuine leather in pure white. It opens/closes with a glamourous diamanté clasp, and comes with a long detachable silver chain. It is fully lined in the palest pink cotton with an all-over heart pattern und it's softly padded to help keep its shape.

This DB Exclusives purse is a one-off creation and cannot be reproduced once sold! It comes with its own soft cotton dustbag for safe storage. Whether you're a bride-to-be or celebrating a special event - this bag will make you feel like a princess!

p.s. for anyone interested - the dress is a vintage debutante ball gown, which I spotted while traveling around Europe. I had the bodice altered by a friend of mine who is a professional fashion designer. It's not for sale ;-)

New Year, New Challenges

School starts here on 7th January, which means I will be occupied the next couple of days preparing and getting ready for my role as tutor/agony aunt. As every year I will be hearing a lot of amusing holiday stories; there will be happy faces from those whose parents have indulged their every whim, and long faces from the ones who didn't receive the latest cell phone model they had hoped for. I presume I'm going to be seeing more long faces, as even the more well-off parents will have undoubtedly tightened their spending budget! I will also be working on setting up my own website. I admit, I am not proficient in HTML, but I'm up for the challenge! Who knows? Some of my students can probably help me out here! The image shows a little coin purse I made from a bright red polka dot fabric. (Sorry, for those of you who are nursing hangovers today - this pattern not being easy on the eye! haha) The flap closes with a hand-painted wooden button. You can click to enlarge if you want to see a close up of that button! Have a great New Year's day!
