How to upcycle a denim shirt into a pillow - Tutorial

Hello lovelies!           Hallo, ihr Lieben!

This is a super easy upcycling project that can be done in one afternoon and suitable for beginning sewers. I have adapted it from one of my pins on my craft board on Pinterest.
*

Supplies / Material

1 old denim shirt / 1 ausrangiertes Jeanshemd
cutting mat, rotary cutter or scissors / Schneidematte, Rollschneider oder Schere
Ruler / Lineal
pins / Stecknadeln
measuring tape / Maßband
fabric marker / Stoffmarker
sewing machine & thread / Nähmaschine & Nähgarn
serger (optional) / Overlock (optional)
trims (optional) / Pompomborte (optional)

Step One / Schritt Eins

Trim off any unnecessary pockets, iron the shirt and lay out flat on the cutting mat to determine desired size. My shirt was large enough to make a 12 x 12" cover from. Add approx. 1" seam allowance and using the fabric marker and ruler draw a square.

Step Two / Schritt Zwei

Pin the two fabric layers together so that both layers remain straight while cutting. Make sure that the button panel is centered. You have now got two square pieces of fabric (if necessary, iron again). Decide whether you'd like to add any trim, like my white pompoms, to your pillow.

Step Three / Schritt Drei

Open at least one button (for turning) and layer the two denim squares right sides facing. If using trim make sure it is aligned with raw edges. If using pompoms make sure they are pushed away from raw edges as you do not want to sew into them by mistake! Pin all around. Sew a 1/4" seam making sure to catch the trim inbetween layers. Serge the edges if you wish (or use zigzag stitches). Snip corners and turn pillow case right side out. Open remaining buttons, add pillow insert, then close buttons.
Fluff up the pillow :)

♥ Happy weekend ♥ & have fun!
Viel Spaß!

  29. That pillow looks great! After my grandfather died, my mom turned one of his plaid shirts that he'd always wear into a pillow for my grandmother. It was the sweetest thing.
