Fun summer ruffle skirt

Being a lot smaller than the average woman around here, store-bought skirts/pants rarely fit. Most of them are too long and too wide in the hip, so I have been forced to alter them - which, to be honest, is my least favourite thing to do! So, a while back I drafted my own skirt pattern, which turned out to be more complicated than I thought. One thing I learned while I made the muslin sample is that all corners on the pattern need to be absolute 90° angles, otherwise you'll end up with little 'cones' sticking out where the seams meet :-\
For the actual skirt I used a Japanese cotton/linen blend in a peachy rose with brown polka dots. It closes with a zip on the side plus button. As I was taking this photo I was thinking that my flea-market coat hook is really coming in handy for displaying all sorts of projects :)

Have a great week!

  2. That is a very nice skirt. The style, and color are perfect. I wish I had your talent. I can sew a little but couldn't even begin to make my own patterns or alter something I bought.

What an adorable skirt! I didn't know you drafted clothes patterns as well as purse patterns! So cool! Last week I just drafted a 40's style dress: sweetheart neckline, low back, princess seams in the front, knee length. Funny thing is, the skirt was fine, the neck and arm facings were easy fitting, even the zip in the back is going well (finishing the zip today), but those princess lines....sheer hell! I shall never draft princess lines again! I will be finishing the dress today and will be drafting another sun dress...'40's style, of course, but with a different neckline than the sundress on my blog. Just a hint for you, and I will be trying it out with my next draft...instead of using muslin, try using old sheets. Obviously, the sheet has to be a high thread count so as not to lose shape when you cut it in pieces, but a friend of mine gave me the idea. I pay about $1.99/yd for muslin here when not on sale and you can pick up sheets at garage sales for pretty cheap. You just have to make sure the thread count is high...you can feel the difference. The dress I'm finishing now, I used a super-cheap muslin, so the pattern pieces after tearing apart my muslin sample were not very stable. I think this added to my problem with the princess lines. This weekend I picked up a big box of sheets at an estate sale for $5. Although I couldn't use half of them (low thread counts, jersey knit, yucky stains!), I still got more fabric than if i would have purchased 2 1/2 yards of muslin! I will have to let you know how it goes.

Draft more stuff! I wanna see what you come up with!!! You know, we should share patterns - we are both tiny :)

  8. That is so my style. Reminds me of Betsey Johnson designs. You may know of her and her clothing tends to run quite small.

  9. How funny that you just posted this about drafting patterns. I actually was thinking of you yesterday but I am working on patterns right now and am having dreams about lines and measurements! At the rate I am going I will be drafting patterns until December for just a few styles:)

  12. Indeed a very pretty skirt. For sure that would fit me since I am petite and short. How I wish I could learn how to sew that I won't end up annoyed everytime I go shopping and can't find my size.
