Styling ideas with boho necklace [ + 10% coupon from oNecklace ]

The friendly people over at oNecklace recently approached me for a jewelry collaboration. As long time readers might know I've showcased several pieces here on Duni's Studio including this incredibly gorgeous monogram ring. Truth be told I had been eyeing the pretty dreamcatcher necklace on their site for quite some time, because first, I like boho jewelry and second, it simply reminds me of summer days spent at the beach. Summer being my favorite season and all...
This type of necklace is quite versatile. The obvious choice would be to wear it with a maxi dress, but here I've combined mine with an animal print top. I've put together some simple styling ideas below. I can think of three outfits I could put together with these pieces! My favorite for summer is the one with the denim shorts! The necklace works both in the beachy style worn with striped maxi dress or with the boho blouse or the casual chic style with print top, cropped blazer and skinny jeans. Which is your favorite?

I wanted to be absolutely sure about the necklace length, so before ordering I put a measuring tape around my neck and figured out where the dreamcatcher pendant would hang. I believe that larger sized pendants look better when they hang a little lower. Luckily at oNecklace there are five lengths and two styles of chains - box or rolo (seen here) - to choose from. This necklace is available in .925 sterling silver as you can see here (stamped as seen above), 24K gold-plated or rose gold. All jewelry is nickel-free. I love the intricate design with its three sweet dangling feathers. The chain is attached in two places, so the pendant hangs well. I have a feeling this is going to be my go-to necklace throughout spring and summer!

Mother's Day gift guide

Mother's Day is coming up on Sunday, 14th May. When my Mom was still with us I always looked forward to this day. For us it was more a mother-daughter day and I used to plan a whole itinerary for us on this day. I would always treat my Mom for coffee and cake at a nice café and gift her something I knew she would love. This was followed by window shopping and / or a leisurely stroll through the park depending on the weather. Good times!

In honor of Mother's Day I have put together a small gift guide for those who are still looking for ideas :)

Sophie's Roses & Hearts

Hello lovelies!     Hallo, ihr Lieben!

For the longest time I wanted to add tableware to my shop, but it's proven to be a challenge in more ways than one. My sourcing took many months. Of course, I could have jumped on the bandwagon and ordered the popular Danish brand often referred to as GG on social media, but after extensive research I found that the European market is oversaturated with this brand. Also, I did not fully agree with their trade conditions. Besides, I'm someone who naturally goes against the flow :) I wasn't going to give up that easily, so on I searched. When I first came across Sophie Allport, it felt as if I was guided to do so. Sophie is a graphic artist with a first class honor's degree specializing in illustration. I fell in love with her delicate pink roses and heart designs on the spot! Before starting her own business Sophie worked as an illustrator for books and magazines in London. She now works out of her countryside home in Lincolnshire which she shares with her husband and three boys. I love the fact that it's a family run business with her brother taking care of the business end leaving Sophie free to focus on design and product development.

Just to clarify, the tableware is fine bone china, not pottery. The items are hand decorated and finished in Stoke-on-Trent in England, a town famous for several porcelain manufacturers. The items come in a smart 100% recyclable gift box perfect for gifting. The china is microwave safe and perfectly safe to wash in the dishwasher too - provided the temperature is set to fine china. Nevertheless, to keep the china from looking its best I recommend to wash by hand after use and to not use scouring pads and / or abrasive detergents. As with all fine china, it is advisable to not subject it to extreme temperature changes.

Sophie has plenty of designs available, but the roses and hearts theme seems to fit my personal and shop aesthetic nicely :)

I have listed most of the items I received in my first shipment. Please note due to the nature of the items I will be sending orders containing fine bone china registered and insured, so the shipping costs will be slightly higher - all the more reason to purchase more than one piece. I, for one, am very pleased with the design and quality of these items. And coming from a super discerning person that's saying something :)

Happy Friday!

Duni's Studio online shop

It's been a little over six months since I launched my own online shopping site. As things are getting even more complicated (and more expensive) over at Dawanda, not to mention all the technical issues, I am super happy with my decision! The initial cost of building my website was admittedly expensive, but totally worth it. Plus I broke even in the first quarter. I am not saying that it's easy running your own site. In fact, I'm focused on it all the time. Being simultaneously the owner, seller, buyer, accountant, PR person, stock checker, shipping department and now website administrator and techie takes on a whole new meaning! Plus keeping up-to-date with legalities is a must for every online shop owner. So while the maintenance is a lot of work there are so many pro's to owning your own site. For one, invoices are automatically generated, which saves time. Communication with customers is easy via DM and / or the contact form. My site is SSL secure, so all personal information is safe. I have not had any issues whatsoever with my hosting service. What a relief! And I have total control of the design aspect of my site. For years I have been wanting to streamline my "look". Now my website logo is on my flyers, business cards and other promotional material and ties in well with my blog too. Most don't realize though, that many months preceding the launch I already had my strategy and concept in place. Unlike on traditional selling venues I can be much more flexible with what I offer. Part of my concept is to offer originality and exclusivity (at least within German-speaking countries). Using Instagram as a business tool has helped me identify potential customers. I've stuck with my routine of posting one photo daily to keep my followers informed and "entertained". It's all about engaging the customer. These days I average around 20 comments per post, even though relatively speaking I don't have that many followers. However, posts with a higher engagement rate keep showing up at the top of the feed. But I digress. I contemplated my concept for the shop for a very long time. Basically I identified my customer base first, then planned a concept for the next 5 - 7 years, taking economical, social and yes, even political developments into consideration. So, while fabrics are my main business I have added paper goods that fit my concept and have recently added another category, which also reflects my concept and aesthetic. The photo at the top is not random, so three guesses what's new in my shop :) I'm pretty excited about this new line and will be introducing it on my blog shortly. Overall I am very pleased with the progress and expansion of my website. I know there is still room for improvement. I am currently working on implementing more payment methods. This involves third parties, so will take a while longer. In the coming weeks and months I will also need to invest in well-placed ads and generally keep the promotion going. Sometimes it gets a bit much for one person, especially when I'm not feeling particularly well. But despite the long work days and the constant promoting I'm loving all of it. Not many people can say this, but my job truly is my happy place and I am so grateful :)

Monday Moodboard

Recently, at the trade fair I saw lots of pretty nursery decorations. Bunnies and elephants were a popular theme. This inspired me to create a nursery theme for my mood board today. I also recently completed a baby quilt for a friend. That was quite the task and after stitching the binding on by hand I'm not so sure I'll be repeating that in a hurry ;-)
*

Hello and welcome back to Part 2 of my sheep tutorial. Check out Part 1 here and if you haven't already you can download the free  PDF template here. Remember to print it, so the sheep is horizontal on the paper. Just a note: I worked hard to design and create this sheep and write the tutorial. Please kindly don't use my template for commercial purposes. Thank you!
*
Vielen Dank!

Step Nine
By now the sheep body should be nicely stuffed and "puffy" and the gap at the back hand stitched closed. It is time to attach the ears and hair piece. Close the gap in the ear piece with a little fabric glue. Then find the middle and glue on top of the head as pictured. Be sure to have the fabric that you used for the head on the outside. Leave to dry for about 10 minutes.

Step Ten
To keep the ears from flapping around you will need to make tiny hand stitches about an inch down from the top of the head. Do this front and back. Try to make the stitches as "invisible" as possible.

Step Eleven
Stuff the hair piece with a bit of fiberfill. You don't need much, just enough to fill the shape. Then put a little fabric glue on the snip you made earlier. Place the hair piece on top of the head and press down firmly. Leave to dry for about 10 minutes.

Step Twelve
To secure the hair piece make a few "invisible" stitches at the back, attaching it to the neck. Congratulations, you have just made your own little cloud sheep!

🐑 🐑 🐑 🐑 🐑

Schritt Neun

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial. As always, if you have any questions simply drop me a line via email or in the comments. I will be taking a break through Easter Sunday, but you can still keep in touch with me via Instagram. Thanks for reading along and have a lovely Easter holiday!
👯

Hello lovelies!        Hallo, Mädels!

After a long, long time I'd like to share my cute new sewing tutorial including free PDF template. I designed this little sheep, which kind of resembles a puffy cloud, hence the German title "Wolkenschäfchen", literally Cloud Sheep. Anyway, this sewing tutorial is intermediate level, but even if you are a beginner you can try it! Just go slowly :) Also, because there are quite a lot of steps to create a sheep, I have decided to split this post into part one and part two (tomorrow).
*

You will need

2 coordinating cotton fabrics
Fiberfill for stuffing
Fabric marker
Fabric glue
Basic sewing kit
Sewing machine

Ihr benötigt

2 verschiedene Baumwollstoffe
Füllwatte
Stoffmarkierstift
Textilkleber
Basic Nähutensilien
Nähmaschine

Step One
Download the template, print to fit the page horizontally and cut out the body piece (A), the leg piece (B), the ear piece (C) and the hair piece (D). Layer the two fabrics together, right sides facing. Stitch. Open up and iron seam toward the fabric you will use for the sheep body.

Step Two
Fold fabric in half horizontally.

Step Three
Lay body piece on folded fabric, making sure the dashed lines match up with stitched seam line. Trace the sheep with fabric marker pen and stitch. Remember to leave gaps for the legs and for turning through the back.

Step Four
Carefully cut out the shape leaving a narrow margin. Important - do not turn right side out just yet!

Schritt Eins
PDF Vorlage runterladen, auf A4  horizontal ausdrucken. Vier Teile ausschneiden: Körper (A), Bein (B), Ohrteil (C) und Haarteil (D).

Schritt Zwei
Stoff rechts auf rechts horizontal falten. Naht trifft aufeinander.

Schritt Drei

Schritt Vier
Vorsichtig mit einem 0,3 cm Rand ausschneiden. Achtung - noch nicht wenden!

Step Five
Place two layers of the fabric which you used for the head right sides together. Trace two legs. Place two layers of the fabric used for the body right sides together. Trace the hair. Layer one of each fabric right sides together and trace the ears.

Step Six
Stitch the legs, but remember to keep the top open for turning. Stitch the ears, leaving a gap at the side for turning. Stitch the hair all the way around. Carefully cut out the leg and ear pieces with a narrow margin and turn right side out. Cut out the hair piece and make a small snip in just one layer. Turn right side out through the snip. (you will glue down the hair later, so snip won't be visible). Iron all pieces.

Step Seven
This step requires patience. Take a little fiberfill and stuff the legs without going all the way to the top. Next, push those legs into the gaps on the sheep body. It will be a tight fit. I use a chopstick for this, but a blunt pencil works too. Pin and stitch closed the gaps through all layers.

Step Eight
Carefully turn sheep right side out through the gap left open in the back. Iron! Stuff with fiberfill and close the gap with a couple of stitches by hand.

🐑 🐑 🐑 🐑 🐑

Stay tuned for Part 2 tomorrow...

Autumn / Winter 2017 Trend Report [ Crafts ]

Hello lovelies!        Hallo, ihr Lieben!

A week later and I still feel bone tired. This year's international trade fair for craft and hobby was just as busy and well attended as last year's. It seemed there were even more suppliers there than usual. I was on a tight schedule, but on Saturday I actually missed the main event because I wasn't feeling well and had to go back to the hotel to rest. Also, I didn't bring along my camera this time around, so the pictures below are just a few snapshots I took with my phone. While crafts of all kinds continue to be a favorite leisure activity, most importantly (for me) sewing once again tops the list, with a total turnover in 2016 of 465 million Euro in fabrics alone! The DIY scene, however, is changing - it's become more diversified, younger and closely networked with a community vibe. Trending in knit fashion for A/W 17/18 season are muted colors in light grey, burgundy, cream and taupe. Lots of flowing silhouettes and oversized sweaters. And thankfully no fur pompoms in sight. Who knows? Maybe my rant in last year's trend report, which was seen by one of the organizers actually made a difference. Anyway, can't wait to receive the new fabrics I ordered for my shop!
*
