Gray is the new black

I've made an impromptu decision. As of today I will be transitioning to gray hair or granny hair as it's termed on social media! I'm following in the footsteps of my blog friend Val from Miss Val's Creations. She's rocking the gray hair with a super cute pixie cut these days :) Check out these gray and silver haired beauties on my Pinterest board (follow link to original source). As my long time readers know I've been going gray since I was 22 y.o. like my maternal grandmother, and even though I've been using  plant-based hair dyes it's simply too much of a hassle when you're self-employed like me.

Currently I have streaks of silver around my hairline and when I lift my hair there are chunks of steel gray underneath. My stylist says I will probably have a lengthy transitioning so I'd better get used to the salt'n'pepper look! Many women with graying hair don't realize that the skin tone changes as well. Sadly, once my hair has turned all gray / silver I won't be able to wear my beloved pastel clothes. My face will look washed out otherwise. Moreover, floral prints will make me look frumpy. Granny hair requires a whole different wardrobe and color palette!

In anticipation of this I have been clearing out my wardrobe (I do this bi-annually anyway) and donated my gently used clothing to the distribution center for refugees. Beige, tan, brown, peach and yellow will not look particularly good with my skin tone and gray hair. Nor will gold-toned, rose-gold or bronze jewelry for that matter! Thankfully I can still wear bold tones, such a fuchsia pink and red as well as jewel colors: i.e. garnet, emerald, sapphire. Black, pure white and charcoal gray all look good with gray hair and are the obvious choice for basic pieces!

New hair new wardrobe

This is an example of my future wardrobe. The best part - I own similar pieces already and would simply need to update with one or two tops and play around with silver statement jewelry. As far as my hairstyle goes I'll probably have it cut into a layered bob. I'm both scared and excited about this new style direction!

  1. I noticed all your pins with gray hair on Pinterest and even took one with me when I went to get my hair cut. I stopped coloring my hair a long time ago. It was just too much of a hassle.
I like the new wardrobe choices, very stylish

  2. Hallo liebe Duni,

  5. I'm so excited for your Duni! You are going to love the free feeling you have from no longer worrying about coloring your roots!

I am totally salt and pepper right now. I actually thought I was more grey than I am. It is blended beautifully now being all natural. Natural has a way of looking just right! This new color palette is beautiful. I never gave much thought to this. I should probably pay attention to the mirror more these days. :)

  6. You'll be beautiful no matter your hair color so I can't wait to see the new natural you! My friend let her hair go to its natural grey in her 40s and she wears any color and looks good. Her hair is more darker grey so maybe that's why.

  9. I stopped coloring my hair long ago and the idea of coloring it now would make me feel not like me. I also went natural and no long chemically treat it and wear it very short. It saves time, money and hassle. And that has to be a good thing.

  12. I like your wardrobe choices, Duni. I wear a lot of black, but I have also found myself liking jewel tones -- so glad they are gray hair-approved! You will be beautiful with gray hair. Once you clear the psychological hurdle, gray hair is quite liberating.

  13. You're so stylish! I don't think it would have even occurred to me that a person might want to change their wardrobe because of their hair color. It makes sense, now that I think about it, but I really don't think it would have occurred to me on my own.

  14. My hair started losing it's color when I was thirteen. I stopped trying to do anything about it in my late twenties. Now it's mostly white. I've always had a summer complexion and have never been able to wear black. Still can't today unless I want people to think I'm deathly ill! Navy is my favorite along with gray.
