Monday Moodboard

Hello and happy Monday! I hope you all had an enjoyable weekend. Despite the cold spell I'm thinking ahead to springtime and the Easter holiday, which is coming up in March. I had so much fun curating this Easter moodboard (as a pastel lover). Here you go...
*
Hallo zusammen!

My cup of tea & mini scone recipe

Tea. Black. Two sugars please :)

As a baby nobody could figure out why I puked everytime I was given milk. My poor mother took me from one doctor to the next, but lactose intolerance wasn't really heard of back then. So I was given either chamomile or weak black tea to drink. Plus freshly pressed orange juice to compensate the missing calcium. And because calcium is better absorbed by eating banans I was served a. lot. of bananas. But I digress.
What I'm trying to say is that I've been a lifelong tea drinker and somewhat of a connoisseur of tea :)

While I don't have the time to celebrate a proper high tea during a busy week, I do make sure to make my tea with loose tea leaves rather than the unidentifiable ground bits usually found in tea bags. Did you know that some companies add artificial color to those? My two favorite black teas are Assam and Ceylon (shown above). Assam tea leaves are grown in India, in the Brahmaputra valley. The tea is harvested from March to October. There are three types of Ceylon tea, however they all come from regions in Sri Lanka. Jasmin tea, a blend of black and green tea perfumed with jasmine flowers is ideal to accompany Asian spicy food. Lastly, beneficial green tea - mostly harvested in China, Japan and Taiwan - which I enjoy drinking pure.

Tea and fresh, homemade scones! Perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon. My mini scones are easy to make and are ready in about 20 minutes. Here's my recipe for busy people:
*

  1.  preheat oven to 428 °F. Line a baking sheet with grease proof paper.
  2.  In a bowl sieve the flour with the baking powder and salt. Cut in the chilled butter, add sugar and continue cutting in until mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
  3.  make well in the center, pour in the milk and stir well. Once no longer sticky use your hands to knead until a firm dough is formed.
  4.  Roll out on a floured surface to about 1 inch thickness. Use a 2 inch cookie cutter (mine is flower shaped) and cut out about 10 pcs. Transfer to baking sheet and bake for about 10 - 12 minutes.
  5.  Transfer to wire rack to cool for about 5 minutes.
  6.  Serve still warm with butter, clotted cream and/or jam of your choice.
*
  1. Ofen auf 220°C vorheizen. Ein Backblech mit Pergamentpapier auslegen.

Happy Friday!

How instagram has helped me grow my business

Instagram has been around for quite a while and I was probably one of the last people jumping on the IG bandwagon sometime in mid 2014. At the time I was already overwhelmed keeping up with all my other social media outlets. So what made me change my mind? Two things.

  1. I decided to focus my time and energy on only the social media that performed well
  2. After researching instagram I decided to use it as a tool to gain potential customers
Now, I'm not a hard sell type of business person. I would feel uncomfortable bombarding my audience with pic after pic of breakfast bowls, photos of the sky or in my case bolts of fabric day after day. So I came up with a strategy that would get my wares eyeballed by my target audience without the boredom factor. Personally, I like variety. I like mixing things up with some colorful flower photos, DIY ideas, food, travel pics, my cats and yes, the occasional selfie :) However, I always keep in mind to post at least 2 - 3 business related photos within a week. Typically they would look like those in the collage above. You will notice they are all different yet carefully styled and most important - all feature my fabrics and / or craft. I was lucky in that a couple of my existing customers were on instagram already and happened to comment on said fabrics. That got the attention of other instagram users who are also interested in fabrics/sewing/craft, but had never even heard of me or my shop(s) before. Ultimately, some of these users became my customers, even repeat customers. This type of "word-of-mouth" advertising is exceptionally valuable and as a small business with limited advertising budget I am immensely grateful for shout-outs by any of my existing customers. Sometime at the beginning of this year I held a special, carefully planned instagram-only giveaway with almost 200 entries. Among the entrants were, you guessed it, potential customers!

Using instagram as a marketing tool has definitely been a learning curve. It requires ingenuity as to which #hashtag to add to which image in order to catch the attention of my target audience. While a huge number of followers might be impressive at first glance - for business purposes quality is more important than quantity. Being followed by say... fashion dolls or well-muscled men does absolutely nothing for my business! To gain the right type of follower also requires posting high-quality photos and posting consistently, that is at least once a day. Yes, it involves time and effort, but it is time well spent as I'm gaining more clients/customers each month. I usually style these photos a week in advance, but if I'm strapped for time and I really don't have anything to post I simply don't. Better to post nothing than what you had for dinner last night.

I'm always quick to respond to inquiries / comments / messages left on my instagram by users. Communication is a big part of customer service, both before, during and after the sale. I anticipate questions regarding my items and always provide as much information as possible to make the decision process easier for potential customers. This is way more efficient than back and forth convos. I check my instagram once every hour or so.

A word about the follow/unfollow phenomenon, which is also very much evident on Twitter and Facebook. Here's my take on it. Some follow you simply to be followed back. If you don't follow back within a couple of days these users will unfollow. Don't worry about it. Some also mistakenly follow. Also, I noticed I get unfollowed with each new photo that I post. Then, overnight, I gain a couple of followers. This is just weird! Then there are those who have been following, liking and leaving comments and suddenly unfollow. Frankly, that's just rude. Whatever their reason they aren't loyal customer material, so good riddance. Also, you will eventually be followed by spam accounts. At some point they might be deleted by instagram itself. Don't worry about it. Rather focus on and interact with real accounts that share your interests. Looking up the hashtags is a great way to find users with similar interests.

That being said, instagram definitely gets more fun once you gain more followers! Just like on any other online plattform it pays to be courteous. Reciprocate likes and leave a friendly comment on accounts you admire. Also, there is a myth going around that accounts that are set to "private" gain more followers. This is simply not true. If you're a small business wanting to attract potential customers than you will most certainly need to have a public account!

Are you a small business owner? What's your experience with instragram as a selling tool? I'd love to hear about it in the comments! #smallbusinesstips

Sukhi Rugs [ Shop Tipp ]

pink patchwork kilim large size

*
You might have heard of Sukhi Rugs. This website offers an amazing variety of handmade rugs. You might want to check out their inspiration page. Btw, "Sukhi" means happy in Nepalese. High up on the popularity scale are the graphic Beni Ourain rugs from Morocco which in my opinion harmonize surprisingly well with the current Scandinavian interior design trend. Also popular are the whimsical feltball rugs handmade in Nepal. If you wish to learn more about the process of how these are made check out this great video! Made by artisans in Nepal, Sukhi gives these makers an outlet to share their work, skill and craft.

*
A few months ago I was approached by the lovely people from Sukhi asking if I'd like to review one of their handmade patchwork kilims. Great timing, as I had been looking for a cheerful pop of color in our entrance area, so after researching the company (I hadn't heard of them before) I agreed. I decided on this bright patchwork rug in fuchsia, which comes in various sizes. This type of rug is made to order. The patches are overdyed in one solid color and wherever the fibres absorb more or less of it, a wonderful vintage effect is created. Patchwork kilims are available in an eco-friendly hemp version too! In fact, I have my eye on one for my studio #wishlist.

*
A few days ago my handmade patchwork rug arrived! I love the mix of floral and graphic patterns. So unique. No two are the same. Since it's flat woven it's the perfect option for our entrance area. But it would definitely brighten up a kid's room too. Each of these rugs arrive with a little label including the artisans name - an opportunity to send a personal note of appreciation if one feels so inclined.
This intrigued me so I researched a little more and was happy to learn that this company doesn't employ agents and works directly with the artisans who receive 2 - 3 x the average salary in their respective countries. The company offers flexible working hours, so that the artisans- many of them women with young children - are able to work from home and look after their children as well. I'm happy that this company engages in fairtrade practices. Plus they have a big sale going currently - don't miss the opportunity if you're in the market for a rug!

Sumi really, really loves this rug!!

Denim Love

I think it is safe to say that everyone (at least in the western world) owns at least one piece of denim. Few things are as classic and versatile as denim, and in 2016 it's as hot as ever - skinny, straight or flared jeans, skirts, dresses, button down shirts, shoes, bags and not to forget home decor. There truly is something for everyone!
*

1. button down shirt Esprit // 2.  // 3. skintight jeggings Uniqlo // 4. jeans dress Uniqlo // 5. flower print skirt Montego// classic black jeans (sold out)

And for those who wish to sew their own clothes (like me) I'm happy to report that I'll be introducing beautiful premium quality denims from The Denim Studio, a division by Art Gallery Fabrics to my fabric shoppe in late spring! Yay! The fabrics are 150 cm wide in dressmaker quality. They come in a fun selection of prints, classic solids, smooth or textured. See swatches below:
*
Siehe Stoffmuster unten:

I've been wanting to sew my own denim shirt dress for ages (the store-bought ones are usually too long) and except for the textured one in the bottom right any one of these fabrics would look cute! The floral one would make a great blouse and my niece would appreciate a pair of jean shorts in the modern print! The solid, textured fabrics can be turned into cool bags! Speaking of bags - how cool is that bag below! It's a diaper bag, but I wouldn't mind using it as a regular bag or perhaps sewing something similar :)
diaper bag / Wickeltasche

Love matters.

This is not specifically a Valentine's Day post. It just so happens that after weeks of drabness and non-stop rain I needed to cheer myself up with a new outfit #handmadefashion. I designed a tunic/minidress with one of my favorite knit fabrics featuring tiny arrows. I embellished the front with a big red heart. I love how it turned out = instant happiness. The previous week I had purchased the most adorable tiny red heart mug. I like that the hearts match my nail polish. I'm detail oriented like that :)
Taking pictures outdoors in winter is always a bit of a challenge where I live. Either it rains or we get sleet, hail and sometimes a hurricane. On this particular day it was super windy, hence the wild hair. I was worried about my lens not being able to focus properly, so I chose a really fast shutter speed. This works, but normally I'd prefer the more skin flattering portrait mode :)

I don't know about you, but whenever I switch on the radio or watch the news these days I'm bombarded by distressing stories. Most of it is sensationalist rubbish, but I do understand that it's easy to get sucked in to that negative vortex, especially if colleagues, neighbors, the taxi driver, the cashier and the news agent keep rehashing the stories. Negativity has never done anyone any good. The trick is to be aware of your thoughts and stop them in their tracks. Don't get me wrong, I'm not immune to dark thoughts, particularly on a day when another case of serious animal abuse crosses my desk. If you follow me on Twitter you may have come across some of my more outspoken tweets! But to carry around negative feelings, be it anger, fear, resentfulness or hatred for days or weeks on end only results in sparking those same feelings in everyone else and risking a stomach ulcer. No thanks. I refuse to be part of a collective, negative mindset as I'm sure many of my readers do too, but might unknowingly be sucked in none the less. The first step in the right direction is to become aware of your negative thoughts and consciously create new, helpful thought patterns. This does take patience and practice, especially in adverse situations. But that's the point and nobody said it would be easy. Keep at it! Over time you will noticeably feel better, become more energized, motivated and life affirming, regardless of the various dramas unfolding around you. And this in turn will have a positive effect on everyone you come into contact with. It's a win-win :)

The point of this post is a gentle reminder for us to live a heart-based life, starting with a little prayer of gratitude each morning and before bedtime. We, as humans, are meant to be kind, compassionate and loving, but it's our ego that often gets in the way. It helps to be less critical of others and oneself. To be unbiased and to move away from reaction towards helpful action. Take good care of your mind and remember to be gentle and forgiving to yourself too!

Let's spread the message of love today and everyday...

Valentine's DIY gift idea ♥ Embroidered Lavender Sachet

Although Valentine's Day isn't that huge over here I do like making a little something, it doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. It's the thought that counts! This DIY calls for some hand embroidery (be mine). I'm the first to admit that this isn't my strong suit and my stitches are a bit uneven for my liking - then again it's not machine embroidery, it's handmade! Go ahead and use my free typography template if you wish.

You'll need || Ihr braucht

1 FQ fine woven linen or linen/cotton blend || 1 FQ feines Leinen oder Baumwoll-Leinen
embroidery floss (colour of your choice) || Stickgarn in Wunschfarbe
embroidery needle || Sticknadel
small (heart) button || kleiner (Herz-) Knopf
self-disolving fabric marker || Stoffmarkierstift (selbstauflösend)
basic sewing kit || Basic Nähutensilien
dried organic lavender || getrockneter Biolavendel

How to:

1. Start by sewing the inner sachet first. Cut two 10 x 10 cm pieces from fabric. Lay right sides together and stitch 0.5 cm all around leaving a small gap on one side for turning.
2. Clip corners and turn right side out. Fill with dried lavender. Close gap with a few slip stitches

Schritt Eins:

How to sew cover:

1. Cut one 11 x 11 cm pcs from fabric (front). Cut two 11 x 8 cm pcs (back)
2. Lay front piece on template. Center the typography and trace with fabric marker.
3. Thread embroidery needle with three strands of floss and begin stitching along marker lines. Make small straight stitches as evenly as possible. Knot at the back. Sew on a small button above the "i".
4. Fold over (1 cm) the two back pieces twice (see illustration below). Iron and stitch.
5. Lay front piece right side up. Lay back pieces right sides down, with stitch ends overlapping.
6. Stitch all around (0.5 cm seam). Clip corners and turn right side out. Iron if necessary. Slip in the lavender insert. Ready for gifting

Schritt Zwei:

4. Rückseitige Teile zweimal 1 cm umschlagen (siehe Zeichnung oben). Bügeln und absteppen.
6. 0,5 cm rundherum steppen. Ecken knapp abschneiden und wenden. Eventuell bügeln. Lavendelkissen in die Hülle stecken. Fertig zum Verschenken

Baked Mango Custard

This is another childhood favorite of mine! Mango is my favorite fruit, but if you can't find any in your neck of the woods, you may substitute with peaches. These custards are easily made. Just make sure to use super fresh eggs and double cream. The individual custards are baked in an ovenproof dish or dishes filled with boiling water. The baked custards should be set and golden on top (see picture below). This recipe makes 8.
*
Ergibt 8 Portionen.

Ingredients || Zutaten

2 ripe mangoes || 2 reife Mangos
lemon juice || Zitronensaft
4 egg yolks || 4 Eigelb
1/3 cup sugar || 85 gr Zucker
1 tsp ginger powder || 1 TL ingwer pulver
2 cups double (heavy) cream || 450 ml Creme double

Topping
cream, toasted flaked almonds || Schlagsahne, geröstete Mandelblättchen

Here's how to make them:

1. preheat oven to 325°F. Peel the mangoes, cut away and chop the flesh. Add juice of half a lemon. Blend until smooth.
2. In a large bowl beat the egg yolks, sugar and ginger together until thick and pale. Stir in the mango purée. In a pot heat the double cream until gently simmering. Stir into the mango mixture and mix evenly. Pour mixture into eight ramekin dishes.
3. Place in ovenproof dish filled with boiling water to come two-thirds of the way up the sides of the ramekin dishes.
4. Bake for approx. 30 minutes, remove from oven and leave to cool slightly. Chill for a couple of hours.
5. To serve - pipe a dollop of whipped cream on each one and sprinkle with toasted almonds. Serve immediately.

Röschenstoff - Princess Rose in Lavendel

Und so werden sie gemacht:

1. Ofen auf 160°C vorheizen. Mangos schälen, Fruchtfleisch in kleine Stücke schneiden.
In acht Auflaufförmchen füllen.

Happy Monday!
