Paris, je t'aime

Okay, technically it wasn't the weekend, but Wednesday and Thursday in Paris doesn't have the same ring to it, does it?! Those of you who follow me on instagram will know that I got really ill upon arrival after eating a Lebanese wrap. I lay awake the whole night alternately shivering and sweating (among other things) It. Was. Awful. The next morning I felt weak and shaky and irritable. Not the best of moods to be in to enjoy the wonderful sights of  Paris (and I sincerely hope my Parisian friend Méli didn't notice). After a cup of tea and some crackers I pulled myself together and we went for a walk. We ended up at the Trocadéro (see below), which is just across from the Eiffel Tower.
*

Even though it was the end of May it was quite cool and windy that day, so I was glad I had packed a cardigan, which I wore underneath my Trench. Also, I never go anywhere without a bottle of water.
*

This, of course, is another famous landmark, the Arc de Triomphe, which sits in the middle of an extremely busy roundabout and which also seems to be a meeting point of all nations of the world. I didn't quite expect this many people, especially since it's not yet peak season. The Arc is located at the western end of the Champs-Élysées, a mile long luxury shopping boulevard. In the picture below I'm at the halfway point looking down towards the Arc.
*

Can you spot the famous store across the street? The robin's egg blue colour of the flags are a dead giveaway :)
*

However short of a stay in Paris I was definitely going to visit a museum. Given the choice of either the Louvre or the Musée D'Orsay, I'd always pick the latter, since I'm a huge fan of impressionist art. A regular ticket (adults) costs €11,- (USD12,-) The Musée d'Orsay is located on the left bank of the river Seine. It is housed in the former Gare d'Orsay, a Beaux-Arts railway station built between 1898 and 1900. There are several levels to visit showcasing everything from Cordier sculptures to post-impressionism, as well as works by Toulouse-Lautrec and Van Gogh. Level 5 is where you'll find the masterpieces of the Impressionist movement. Manet, Degas, Sisley and Monet were well represented, but I was a bit disappointed to not find many works by Renoir, my favourite French painter. For those who need a respite I suggest the café on Level 2 with its eclectic interior design mix of funky modern chairs in rainbow colours, old-fashioned chandeliers and stucco. This museum is really exciting and I noticed how my spirits had lifted.

Unusual for most museums is that you're allowed to take photos inside, although without a flash. On several occasions I heard the security people reprimand visitors for taking photos with a flash. At the time I visited there were a number of school classes and tour groups visiting as well, so I only managed to snap a few pics. As I mentioned there wasn't a lot of work by Renoir on display, but later, in the Museum Shop at Ground level I bought a few Renoir postcards. I love Museum Shops!
*

The Impressionist Gallery stretches along one side of the museum and at the end of it awaits an unexpected, but lovely surprise - below a detail of the famous big clock! (click to see the whole clock)

Across from Musée D'Orsay on the other side of the Seine is the huge Louvre complex. In this photo you can see the right wing of it.

Two days in Paris aren't ever enough to see all the wonderful sights, but I did manage to go up the little hill to Sacré Coeur, the Basilica of the Sacred Heart located in the Montmartre district. I took le métro to get there. From the station at the Arc de Triomphe Charles de Gaulle-Étoile take Line 2 going in the Nation direction and get off at Anvers station. A single one-way ticket only costs €1,80 (USD1,96).

Be warned. This area is a real tourist trap, but from up here you get a great view across the roofs of Paris. For some reason there was a rather gaudy carousel at the base of the basilica. The first thing you'll notice about Montmartre are all the stairways. Many, many stairs up and down. Great exercise for fitness freaks, not so great for the average tourist like me. Here are some impressions of this area.
*
Seid gewarnt.

Of course, Paris wouldn't be Paris if we didn't indulge in a little luxury. On my second and final day Méli and I decided to visit the Salon de Thé at Ladurée, the famous patisserie on the Champs-Élysées well-known for their divine macarons. Below is the distinctive mint green entrance. Only later while looking at the photo on my computer I realized I'd captured my own reflection in the front door :) The place was chock-full. Downstairs tons of customers were lining up to buy macaroons. We were lucky to get a table on the first floor. The interior of the 18th century tea-house is opulent with deep colours, tapestries, chandeliers, mosaics, handpainted doors, parquet and black granite floors.
*

Love the pastel dishes!

All of the pastries here are excellent, but as I still felt a bit queasy I went the safe route and ordered a Ceylon tea and a Passionfruit & Raspberry Tart. It was very sweet yet delicious and just the right size not to feel overstuffed. Méli ordered an Earl Grey tea with a Religieuse Rose, which is a pink Choux Pastry with Raspberry & Rose filling. We enjoyed a lovely afteroon here!
*

As I said, it was a whirlwind visit and I'm sure Paris has a lot more to offer! Nevertheless I'm pleased with what I did manage to see and do in such a short time and it was great to catch up with my old school friend :) Some of you might be wondering that something's missing from this post...nooo, I haven't forgotten (see final photo below)!
*

The Eiffeltower is so famous, that even if you only see part of it it's instantly recognizable.
*

  4. Darling you did it!!! I'm so happy to see all those familiar places which remind me of my trips to Paris! I always will love Paris! But also I can say it is such an unpredictable place to visit in May! Weather is never cooperate for some strange reason! I love Musee D' Orsay as well. After been on both, I can tell it is totally different feeling about them! I always admire a wit of the French people.... ( and how they approached those different styles issues... ) Love to see your final sweet ending!!!!

  6. Happy to read that you did manage to enjoy Paris after all, and thanks for taking me on your trip! I loved the Musee d'Orsay. We planned to go to the Louvre, but it was very busy, and with limited time, we opted for the Musee d'Orsay. Which probably was the same waiting time, but the queue went around two corners that we didn't see when we joined the queue. But very much worth it! I'd love to visit Paris again and enjoy something sweet at Laduree too :-)

  8. Stunning photos! I would LOVE to go back. Montmartre was a total tourist trap when I was there too. A few of my travel buddies had their portraits done there. The views are amazing though!!! I'm glad you were able to get out an enjoy yourself after food poisoning. I will have to remember that museum. It is a treat when you can photograph inside. How funny to see Yoda in Paris!

  13. Paris is wonderful! This brought back a lot of happy memories from our trip there last year. :-) I'm glad you and your friend had such a good time!

If you like impressionism, you should go to the Art Institute if you're ever in Chicago. We have quite the collection, too.

  14. Oh....it is so beautiful there! It is my dream to travel there someday. I am happy that you went...and my daughter. I shall live vicariously through the two of you until I get there.

I am glad you got to Laduree---sorry about feeling poorly though. :( Emma brought me some macaroons from there and I treasured each bite. They are heavenly!

I'm glad you took so many photos and shared them with us!

  19. Guten Morgen, liebste Duni,

  22. The tart looks amazing! I miss French baked goods. The summer I lived with my cousins it was so great to get real baked-on-site items instead of the shipped in from wherever it was made last week like at so many places here. It was really interesting to look at your pictures and know about the places from French and history classes without having any actual memories of seeing them for myself! The last time I was in Paris I was 18 months old. Glad it looks like you had an enjoyable visit in spite of the chill and upset stomach!

  23. Hi Duni! I read the entire post thoroughly, as Paris is always one of my dream places to visit.

Laduree is another dream place. At least in Southeast Asia, I think its only Singapore who houses Laduree. I'm not sure if there is one in Hong Kong. The things is, even though its a luxury brand, people still flock over it.. despite the price tag. I heard there's one coming over to my country but sure enough, it will be as expensive as gold:D

Of the photos, I fell in love with the stairways. I don't know. There's something magical about it for me
