Visit to the vet (twice) and the Kitty Mitt

What a week!
We hadn't really planned on visiting the vet twice - the first time around Sammy got his mandatory annual shots - but a day later we noticed that Sammy was sneezing, rubbing and licking his nose and shaking his head. It looked like he'd caught a cold. So, off we went to the vet again. The whole trip there in the car was awful and nerve-wracking with Sammy making heart-wrenching sounds throughout the ride. Just seeing him so afraid breaks my heart every time :(
Sammy had to endure another couple of shots plus the vet sent us home with medication. Cat owners will know how difficult it is to administer a tablet to a sick kitty! It would be so much easier if they came cheese-flavoured!
While we were there, the vet did a general check-up and apart from the cold Sammy is a healthy cat...well, except for one other thing. The vet pointed out he's a tad overweight (we know) and she recommends he exercise more (we know). Sammy isn't an active cat. He likes licking his toys or snuggling down with or lying on top of them, but you won't see him running after a toy mouse. The one thing that makes him get some exercise is "attacking" the oven mitt - except our arms would always get shredded in the process!
So I sat down one evening and devised a new "toy". I've coined it the Kitty Mitt :)

It's basically an elongated oven mitt. It goes over the elbow. I made it from a cotton fabric with a fun kitty print, added lining and a double layer of interfacing in between. Of course we'll only be testing it out when Sammy is all well again and back to his good old self :)

Hope you all have a great weekend!

  2. Hello Duni! The mitt is really for Sammy. The design of the fabric can't deny it. I wish Sammy will get well soon. I'm sure it will make everyone in your house happy and lively again. :) Have a great weekend too.

  3. Sorry to hear Sammy isn't feeling well :(
But I bet she'll have fun playing with her new Kitty Mitt when she is all better :)

  4. We're sending purrs for Sammy to feel better soon! The Kitty Mitt is a great idea! You should patent it and sell it so lots of kitties can play with it! By the way, we think Sammy has a purrfect Mancatly body. We are both a tad on the not-lean side either and we play quite a bit so there's nothing wrong with that at all!

    Purrs and smooches to Sammy,
    Angel & Isabella

  5. We always get the same comments about Angel's weight and lack of exercise. Trying to get a cat to exercise is not like getting a dog to exercise...Hope that Sammy feels better soon! The over mitt is too funny. You'll have to let us know how that goes.

  6. Wow! That's awesome that could just whip something up like that! I bet your catty will love it. :)

I wish my cat was less active. I work from home and ALL DAY (literally. For hours at a time.) he runs around our apartment, loudly meowing at me to come and pay attention to him. I bet our neighbors think I don't feed him or something. ><

Oh no! Sorry to hear Sammy isn't feeling so well, hopefully he gets better soon. I know what you mean about the car rides- it can be excruciating. Ours sound like they're being murdered. Cute mitt! Hopefully that will get him more active:)

  9. I can really relate to this story on many levels. First, I work for a vet so I see lots of sick little kitties, dogs, rabbits, birds, snakes, you name it!

Secondly...I have a "plump" cat myself. She's 11 years old and I did manage to get 2 pounds off her in the past year or so. I've been feeding her twice a day and in smaller portions. I've also been trying to get her to play a little with me. I took her to work with me last week (while we had our carpets cleaned) and was so happy to see the weight loss.

I hope Sammy feels better soon! Xtra snuggles will be needed.

  10. Liebe Duni,

    Verena

  12. Cat toys are always so personal as each cat likes their own favorite toys but you can only find out what they are by trial and error. Ugh.

We just found out by accident that Hobbes likes laser pointers. That has helped to get him moving again and he has lost some weight. That and going outside again has really helped. He's not so ottoman-shaped anymore. YEAH! Good luck with your mitts!
