Postal Service

There is a saying in German "Grün ist die Hoffnung", roughly translated as 'hope is green' (the colour green being associated with spring, growth, a new leaf etc). Hope is something that I definitely need right now. Since the beginning of this year I've been searching for an alternative solution to the German postal service who have gone beserk with their international shipping prices! They have increased the charge from Euro 8,- to Euro 12,- for the smallest parcel - the one that I frequently use to ship my make up bags. The Euro/US$ rate stands at 1 = 1.3 at the moment. Someone suggested I should flatten my bags like pancakes and stick them in padded envelopes...That's a definite no-no for me. All my bags are wrapped individually and packaged really nicely without loosing their shape, of which I'm particularly proud. Besides, an envelope thicker than 2 cm already costs Euro 12,-, so flattening the bags would defeat the purpose. I have contacted various courier services, however, since mine is a small business and I only ship sporadically I don't qualify to utilize their service. There is one courier who may work with me, but he only delivers to the EU countries. As more and more people from North America, Canada and Asia make inquiries about my bags I'm getting more and more desperate to find a suitable service. I haven't given up hope of finding one yet. Suggestions most welcome! Oh, and the new window will hopefully arrive next week...at least it has stopped raining.

  2. Talking about international shipping, yes, that's very painful for my shop too(because I prefer registered mail), but can't compare the 12 Euro you have to charge...wow.
If it's not so bad, and it can come back to original shape may be you can offer shipping option to your customer, so they can decide. Just my idea. Where are you glass? I hope they really come next week :)

  3. I agree about the postage being so high. Even here in the U.S., they're expensive also. I guess, for now, I'll just admire your purses and handbags on your blogsite. They definitely look adorable.

I'm glad to hear the rain stopped, for your sake. And hope your window will be installed soon also.

    Have a great weekend,
    Tasha

  5. I recently quit shipping internationally, after a terrible experience. I was shipping to Canada, something I have done numerous times, without any problems. Customs would not put my package through, no matter which way we stated on the label what it was, and the value. I lost out on a 150 dollar sale. I hate to do it, but it is more of a pain now, than anything else.

  6. Shipping is out of control, it seems. When I was selling baby shoes, the cost was minimal to ship. But now with the larger items, such as the NICO messenger bag, I sometimes wonder if I ought to even bother international shipping. Good luck with your search.

  8. Thank you, ladies, for your responses. I guess we're all struggling with shipping prices...

rkdsign88 - your suggestion is something I will definitely think about. You are right. I should just offer the 'flattened' option, and see if customers accept it! Thank you!

  10. That really is such a cute little bag!
I was like you originally and would package my tote bags in boxes to keep them from looking crushed upon delivery. But, I learned quickly that most people prefer to pay less in shipping and, given a choice, will choose the envelope packaging to save money. If you let them make the choice and they understand the difference, I'm okay with their decision.

  11. Too bad you can't team up with some other "small" shippers and get a discounted rate.

  12. I'm glad to hear the rain stopped, but I'm sorry to hear about the postage situation.

It is ridiculous what they charge these days. My products ship at high rates also.

I don't have enoough customers yet to qualify for a business bulk type of rate yet. Do they have something like that in Germany that you could take advantage of?

  13. Hi Duni!

I am having an Etsy Party on my blog Jan 26-30. I hope you will join in :)

If you can, can you post my party button on your blog to help spread the word? Thanks!

I am also looking for handmade goodies to give out as prizes, so if you have anything, that would be wonderful...but don't worry if you don't...but maybe you could help me spread the word for that, too? I would really appreciate it!

I love Etsy and thought this party would help get the word out about all of the talent that is out there :)

    Thanks!!!

    Bella

  14. Ugh! Here in the US the prices are going up about 5% on all levels...at least they added one that's useful.
I know what you mean about the squish factor - I hate the idea of flattening my bags too...the bxes do tend to get quite large b/c of it.

Best of luck finding a service!

  17. Good luck, I hope you are able to figure it out. I think that is why many retailers don't ship outside their own countries.

  18. I share your pain Duni, I used to send my glass beads in a nice box but had to bite the bullet and use bubble wrap and tissue~ it's almost 1/2 the cost and so far all has arrived in fine shape.
Good luck in finding a workable solution!
